A perennial herbaceous plant from 15 to 50 cm, with an oblique rhizome and a large number of brown roots. Stems single or few, simple or branched only in inflorescence, rounded or slightly angular, erect or arcuate at base, glabrous. Basal leaves oblanceolate, up to 15 cm, crenate or neyasnozubchatye the edge drawn from uzkoklinovidnogo foundation in long petiole equal plate, stem leaves are linear, in the upper part of the shoot subsessile. Flowers on long stalks, in few-apical inflorescences. Calyx glabrous, conical, its teeth firmly pressed to the rim, they are a little longer than the tube, oblong-lanceolate, up to 1.5 mm wide, obtuse. Corolla light blue, shirokovoronkovidny, up to 5 cm in diameter, divided into shares pointed to 1/2-2/3 of its length. Fruit – capsule. Blooms in June and July, the fruits ripen in July and August.
Almost the entire range of the species is in the range of our country (beyond the Ukraine and Mongolia). In Russia, it is confined to the southern half of the European part, the foothills of the North Caucasus, the steppe zone of Western Siberia. In Central Russia met in Moscow, Tula, Orel, Ryazan region, as well as in all areas of the steppe chernozem zone. It grows in the meadow steppes and steppe meadows. In Penza, California, Chuvashia, Mordovia replaced by the closely related species – BELL Volga with linear and sharp (and not oblong and obtuse) calyx teeth and a purple rim.
