Branched evergreen shrub 40-100 cm tall, with a shallow root system, the representation of a collection of several orders of adventitious roots formed on the trunks submerged in peat moss. Young shoots are scaly-fluffy. The leaves are leathery, oblong-ovate or oblong-lanceolate, with both sides covered with small whitish and rusty scales, dull green on top, bottom, rusty-green, with short petioles. Drooping flowers, gathered in one-sided leafy racemes at the ends of branches. Calyx small, remains quinquepartite. Corolla white, urceolate-campanulate, pyatizubchatym. Fruit – a flattened-spherical pyatistvorchataya box. Flowering in May-July, fruiting from iyulya.Rasprostranena in the band from the Arctic to the forest zone of the Northern Hemisphere. In Russia grows in the northern half of the European part, Siberia and the Far East. Often found in non-black areas of Central Russia, to the south is rare.
Grows mainly in sphagnum bogs and wetlands in light woods. Reaches its greatest abundance in the very poor (oligotrophic), acidic soils. Mycotrophy. Poisonous plant, can cause poisoning of sheep.
