Perennial herb 80-100 cm tall, with a relatively short rhizome and developed beam tonkoshnurovidnyh brown roots. Stems usually solitary, erect at the base and 1.5 cm in diameter, grooved, hollow, at the bottom of naked or nearly naked, on top, especially under inflorescence covered with threadlike filmy glandular hairs, rarely without glandular hairs, branched. The lower leaves are ovate-lanceolate or triangular, with shirokokrylatymi petioles, medium — broadly or linear-lanceolate, sessile or subsessile; uppermost — reduced, similar to bracts. Baskets or shirokotsilindricheskie uzkokolokolchatye, collected in total paniculate-corymbose inflorescence, often reaching lengths of 30-50 cm or more, its large branches at the base of 3-5 mm in diameter, usually upward arcuate, lateral usually significantly higher than the central axis. In each basket usually 25 blue ray flowers. Fruits — dark purple achenes about 6 mm long and 1.5-2 mm wide, lanceolate, ploskovatye, ripe dark purple, with several longitudinal ridges, apex narrowed; tuft consists of an outer circle, represented by short, densely hairy, and internal, can be easily separated from the dirty-white hairs. Blooms in June and July, the fruits ripen in July and August.
Eastern European-Caucasian appearance. In Central Russia is very rare, reliably observed only in Chuvashia, Ivanovo and Moscow regions.
It grows on the banks of water bodies, riparian thickets of shrubs, cultivated as an ornamental and easy escape.
