A perennial herb with faceted stem height of 20-100 cm, covered with stiff hairs erect, usually branched at the top. The leaves are lanceolate, 5-12 cm long and 1 cm wide, fairly gentle, soft, shaggy bristles erect, sitting on a small white bumps on the edge wavy, angular-toothed. Basal leaves up to 18 cm, narrowed into petiole dry up after flowering, stem — up gradually decreasing, upper — sessile, slightly amplexicaul. Flowers with soft bracts ovate-lanceolate, almost sessile, in dense capitate, later rectified loose curls up to 10 cm long calyx bristly, almost half cut into five lanceolate acute lobes in fruit sack sprawling. Corolla purple initially, later gray, voronchato-rotate, limb up to 10 mm in diameter, with a rounded-ovate lobes. The fruits are gray, wrinkled, finely dotted tuberculate. Blooms from May to August, fruiting from June to autumn.
European-Caucasian appearance. In our country, in the European part and the Ante. In Central Russia is found in all areas, but is rare.
Increases in weedy places in towns, on roadsides, in the shallows, furrows in the trash elections. Propagated by seeds (one plant produces up to 10,000 seeds), which are carried by ants, and autonomic — root suckers.
Good honey plant. Used in folk medicine as an expectorant and anti-inflammatory. The roots and flowers contain dyes, coloring wool and silk in red and greenish-gray.
