(German Karnies, from Greek. Koronis — end, finish), the accumulation of snow in the form of a dense canopy on the lee side of the sharp ridges that occurs during blizzards because of "suction" effect of the wind and turbulence (Fig.).
Cornice with a line separation (Dashed)
Width can be up to several. m with a groove (pocket) at the bottom. Slipping, K.. drags the weight of snow and can cause descent avalanche. Especially dangerous K. s. Hanging on either side of the ridge.
For the safety of traffic on K s. should retreat from its summit at such a distance, to be on the windward side of the ridge. The sharp ridge with a K.. need to move from a rope belay. Not allowed to traverse below, p. Often, K. s. is Ch. barrier at the exit from the steep slope of the ridge. In such cases, K. s. ice pick or hem trimmed with rope. If we pass or knock K. s. impossible to break through a tunnel through it (do this only when you exit to the weather side). K. s. impossible to arrange bivouacs, because snow mass can break away from the rocks and "fly" with the tent.
