Many hunters dream recharge his gun cartridge so to confidently take the game circuit, it does not miss the teal or grouse and be fully prepared, having met a goose or capercaillie. Especially sharply this question arises from the owners of single-barrel shotguns, often self-loading — lovers to experiment with ammunition own equipment. Here are many hunters and try to solve the problem on their own equipping cartridges and creating original designs.
During my time as an instructor and instructor at the stand I have accumulated quite a collection of these patrons donated fans «universal» cartridge with assurances splendid fighting qualities of their products. Pretty soon, the number of gifts exceeded a few dozen, and some free time allowed to examine and test their fighting qualities.
Opening rounds of ammunition allowed to be divided into two groups according to the process equipment.
First – cartridges with one shot or close rooms.
The second – cartridges with different shot, characterized by two or more rooms.
Construction patrons were so diverse and often unconventional, that had not only surprised, but also to smash his head in an attempt to repeat the work of hunter-diy to prepare the right amount of similar cartridges for verifying adjustment. It was outfitted with five rounds of each type, the number is quite sufficient to draw preliminary conclusions.
Zeroing held on 16 longitudinal with a diameter of 750 mm targets, the results were averaged. To count the number of hits fractions of different rooms, the target sheet tightly superimposed on soft cardboard that almost no errors allows to distinguish holes from pellets of different rooms.
To test analogs were fitted only those cartridges that do not require production of complex elements and gear that you can use standard components with minor modifications.
For zeroing was used 12-caliber rifle, 0.8 mm choke.
Cartridges of the first group:
- A – gasket-seal, felt wad, shot number 7 – 16 grams, a plastic cup with a shorter shot number 7 – 16 g twist.
- AT – wad plastic container, along the axis of the drilled hole diameter 2.5–3.0 mm, with a short cup, shot number 7 – 16 g of two thin wad of felt, quartered, thin cardboard gasket therebetween, cardboard strip, shot number 7 – 16 g twist.
- FROM – gasket-seal, wad a felt, a plastic container gauge 28–410, shot number 7 – 32 g twist.
Holders of all three groups showed about the same uniformity of debris in contact with the target 40–45% of the pellets in the center of the target, and on the periphery by 25 meters, and in contact with the target 20–30% of the pellets (center) and 25–30% (periphery) at a distance of 35 m. There is a strong concentration in the center of cartridges Group A uniform coating center in cartridges B and a very strong concentration to the center with a weak cover the periphery – in Group C.
Overall, 25 meters choke barrel porting shows the results of the overall accuracy rather peculiar poluchoku, and on coverage – cylinder with pressure, while maintaining a high rate of condensation, but also outside of the targets were quite saturated fraction.
More interesting were the results at a distance of 35 meters, it seems, to a certain extent managed to achieve the desired: a high percentage of damage to the central part of the target with broad coverage of external parts and the peripheral zone, but it is quite a weak saturation fraction.
The use of a larger fraction at the top (A, B) or the central part (C) of the projectile, within one or two rooms, is likely to significantly increase the range of fire, but can be detrimental for small game, quite simply, to break it up within 20–25 meters.
In my opinion, the most efficient use of such cartridges on the marsh lands in detail, where frequent meetings with waterfowl game, using a combination of fraction number 8 (waders) and number 6 (Duck).
Cartridges of the second group:
- D – gasket-seal, felt wad, cruciate insertion of thin cardboard, shot number 7 – 16 g, cardboard pad, roll number 3 – 16 g of the asterisk.
- E – wad plastic, container, roll number 7 – 16 g, excess petals cup stacked on «seven», The top fraction number 3 – 16 g of the asterisk.
- F – gasket-seal, thin felt wad, shot number 7 – 12 g, cardboard lining, thin felt wad, shot number 5– 12 g truncated cup with shot number 3 – 12 g twist.
- G – gasket-seal, felt wad, a mixture fraction number 7, 5, 3, 20 g total mass, thin felt wad, a cross made of thin cardboard, a mixture fraction number 7, 5, 3 – ’20, Twist (heavy cartridge).
For cartridges filled with different shot, shot the results left much to be desired. This has particularly affected the shot «Cocktail» (projectile G), apparently shot uniformly knead the mixture is very problematic.
If ducks amiss «troika» from «Seven»Not to mention the fifth issue, then shot a goose on number 3 30–35 meters too small, and in the cartridge it does not have much. The same can be said about the shooting grouse broods, grouse and capercaillie.
Personally, for myself, I made a conclusion which may have come many hunters: the combined gear cartridge can give results, but not such as to qualify for the full versatility. This is especially true of cartridges filled with a mixture of fractions with a large «takeoff» numbers (eg number 7 and № 1-0-00). And given the complexity and difficulty of such equipment ammunition from such experiments should be abandoned.
But every lover of shooting in flight is the right to seek the original «universal» chuck, preferably guided by a long-standing rule: Shoot the game required one shot and, of course, always in moderation.
