Every evening we sit down at a table with a slightly muffled light and take out our entire firearm, which we hope for daily in the event of a BP or in any other extreme situation. We disassemble, clean, lubricate to make sure: the trunk will not fail in that very situation and will save our life. Everyone knows that the daily maintenance of weapons is a reasonable, regular, necessary norm in our realities. However, far not so much attention is paid to the maintenance of the much more popular and functional subject of your EDC-set – the knife. After all, the truth is, not everyone who reads this article has a firearm. And everyone has a knife. Today we talk about daily maintenance. EDC Foldable.
“He’s wearing American military pants and a shirt with pockets, a fishing hat, and he wears a huge snapping knife with a flick blade a foot long. “Yes, sir, without this knife, I would have been a dead man. A bunch of I-slaves surrounded me one night in an alley. And I just clicked on this old thing and said: “Well, go ahead, you bastards,” and they got rid of it. ”
Jack Kerouac. The angels of desolation
Now imagine that a hefty miscarriage was not lubricated, the mechanism was not cleaned, and the blade was not honed. The blade does not fly out with a whistle, the cutting edge does not shine in the dark, the effect is not produced, the bad guys won. To prevent this from happening, you need to take care of the knife. Good – regularly. Better – at least once a week. Excellent – every day.
Responsibility for the proper operation of your EDC knife It lies only on you from the moment of purchase. And the slightest irregularities, imperceptible, while the knife is on the shelf or neatly attached on the pocket, “climb out” in a little bit difficult situation. Here, as in boxing. Even a splinter (in this case, a second delay in opening or a burr on the blade) can deprive you of a chance to win.
And now a little about how all this is done.
The first case. If everything is running
You love and respect your instrument, but somehow did not think about its maintenance. Or did not consider it critically important. Or tested it for wear resistance by such perverted methods. Never mind. Your knife is in poor condition. And it needs to be fixed. How:
1. Wash and clean
Victorinox, for example, bequeathed to wash their knives in a warm will, to clean the places clogged with dirt or grease with strong water pressure. You can use a soap solution, a brush with a medium or long pile will come in handy, and then an old toothbrush. Do not overdo it with chemistry: it is expensive and it is not known how your pet will react to this or that detergent.
Important! Many people come to mind to disassemble the knife and rinse everything separately. The idea is not the best, if you do not have confidence in your ability to collect everything back (and so that there is no extra detail left after that …)
Ordinary household hair dryer or simply – in a warm dry room. Do not neglect towels, cloth, napkins. They can also be cleaned with a knife. I think it is not necessary to explain why it is important that water does not remain in the mechanism.
3. Bring in proper form
- Remove corrosion stains on the blade using an eraser or atopolopoli. With a brush with a small abrasive polish, we give the blade a look нов as good as new ’and move on.
- To debug the mechanism and put in order the hinge. When it is already cleaned of dirt and dried, it’s time to lubricate it. A few drops of Ballistol lubricant or Breakfree oil will suffice. You can use any other gun or watch oil. You really only need a few drops, and the remaining oil should be carefully removed with a napkin. After applying the grease 10-15 times, fold the knife apart so that it is evenly distributed over the mechanism, and remove the residue again.
- Sharpen About what bars to use in what cases, you can read in the article – How to choose a sharpener for a knife?
4. Final touches
This item contains prescriptions of cosmetic rather than functionally necessary nature. After sharpening, the cutting edge can be polished in a ‘mirror’. Some sukonkoy and auto polish lead to the proper form and the blade itself. You can also lubricate the surface of the blade with gun oil, treat with a grease or impregnation the wooden handle of your knife.
Case two. Regular procedure
You do this every day. Or maybe once a week. Most likely, your instrument is in perfect order. Or it will be if you follow the instructions and do not forget to clean the knife before going to bed.
1. Inspection and cleaning
Admire and admire. At the same time, check whether dirt, blood or pieces of cake are stuck somewhere. Remove unwanted items like these and gently rinse.
Important! In this case, the knife does not necessarily take a warm bath, after which it will have to be dried with a hair dryer and lubricated again. Just remove the dirt.
2. No dust
Blow mechanism, cavity inside the handle, remove dust with a toothpick and napkin. Yes, dust is unlikely to seriously damage your knife. At the initial stage. Then it can stick together with grease and harden, which will significantly reduce the speed of ejection of the blade. Yes, and working with a clean tool is somehow more pleasant, right?
3. Edit the blade
I am a perfectionist. I want the cutting edge to be perfect. As far as I can afford the tools that I have available. No burrs and no beginnings. On the stones I rule the cutting edge, and then I bring GOI on the paste.
After editing and polishing clean again. Sometimes the knife is used in the process of eating, so clean does not hurt him. If possible, remove dirt from the handle. A clean handle is more catchy and there is no doubt about the suitability of a knife for working in the kitchen, for example.
It is clear that in survival conditions, to keep the cutting edge in perfect condition and to disinfect the blade and handle after use is more than difficult and somehow … unwise. But in the conditions of everyday life it is quite realistic and quite easy. Moreover, with a share of enjoyment of the process of caring for your things, this turns into a kind of ritual. Take care of the knife and it will take care of you.
