There may be cases where you can not use a pepper spray already prepared. What happens if there is a shortage, a natural disaster or any other form of crisis, including an economic collapse? You will have to take everything into your own hands and, eventually, you will have to prepare your own personal defense tools, items and, in our case, a spray of homemade pepper. It will help in a variety of cases. It can protect it from aggressive humans and even from rabid or wild animals.
It is still important to keep in mind that if you have breathing problems you should not prepare the spray yourself. If you still prefer to do it yourself, be very careful, wear a face mask and prepare the spray in a ventilated area or room. Otherwise, someone else can prepare the solution for you, and this person should be a trusted friend or relative.
How to make pepper spray at home
So this is what you need to prepare and do, have your own homemade pepper spray.
As you may be guessing, your first step will be to select the right type of pepper or chili. It must be in dry form. If you tend to grow your own chili, this is also a perfectly adequate solution. However, before committing to a particular type of pepper, we need to briefly discuss the itching of each type.
We will use a certain unit of measurement for heat, and this unit is the Scoville heat unit (SHU). In general, the hotter the pepper is, the stronger the effect will be.
To begin with, the softest known chile is Cayenne red pepper. It has a classification of around 30,000, up to 60,000 SHU. There are several less potent than cayenne pepper, such as serrano pepper (around 10,000-25,000 SHU), jalapeño pepper (up to 8,000 SHU) and peppers are rated as the least hot (if any).
We are reaching the average rate, from 50,000 SHU to 150,000 SHU, and you can find the Thai Bird Chili in that range.
Next, we are reaching the high level of itching. The Scotch Bonnet and Habanero peppers are rated at around 100,000 SHU, reaching up to 350,000 SHU. The Havina Savina Network reaches 650,000 SHU. The most popular in this range are the Naga Jolokia chile and the Bhut Jolokia chile, which go above 1,000,000 SHU, up to 1,500,000 SHU. This is considered one of the hottest types of chile.
However, on the scale, the hottest type of pepper known so far is the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. Its range goes from 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 SHU.
The container can be almost anything that can provide a liquid in the form of an aerosol. You can choose an empty bottle of your toiletries or buy empty bottles of one and # 8216; yourself-shop ‘.
Before filling the spray container with the pepper solution, first inspect it thoroughly. Try it with water. Try spraying the water and see if the container drips water from somewhere or opening. It must be a reliable aerosol container, or it can stain your clothes, furniture and even your hands. If you accidentally touch your eyes (and there is pepper residue on your hands), you can end up with very irritated eyes.
Prepare the following products:
- No less than 6 chilies Make sure they are as hot as you can find them. Optionally, you can add more chili or peppers if you want the spray to be stronger and more powerful;
- You need to chop it and crush it in a jar. It can be large (or choose two small ones);
- Food dehydrator (or manual dehydration) to dry the peppers / peppers;
- Safety gloves and goggles, plus a respiratory mask (to protect from the strong solution, especially if it is sensitive to pepper);
- Chopper / Knife (to cut);
- Two bottle containers, preferably sealable (one large and one smaller);
- Fine cloth to remove the pit and the seeds;
- Funnel (to facilitate the transfer of the solution);
- Vinegar – this will be the delivery system. The pepper solution will be better preserved in vinegar, instead of in water); Optional: Use rubbing alcohol;
- Baby oil: all the solution will stick better on clothes, face, etc. It will wash a little harder;
- Optional: A third container in case you have some pepper spray solution left. You will have to keep it in a cool place.
The steps of preparation
First you must prepare the peppers or chili dehydrating them. There is no faster or efficient way, so you can use a dehydrator, you can dry them in the sun or even prepare them at low temperature in the oven. Either of these methods will work well.
When the peppers are ready and dry, place them in a blender. Alternatively, grind or chop them (use a vegetable cutter), but make sure they are cut as small as possible. Next, it’s time to chop / mix the garlic. In any way that is possible for you, use that and make sure the garlic is finely chopped. Then take the baby oil and mix with the ingredients so far, or mix in a blender.
Then add the vinegar or alcohol (12 ounces) in the mixed mixture (or in the bowl). You must aim for a homogeneous solution. The mixture should be as smooth as possible (depending on the cooking tool you are using). If using a blender, be careful not to splash the mixture while adding alcohol / vinegar. To avoid splashing, add the vinegar / alcohol slowly, while the blender still works. Mix the mixture for 2-3 minutes.
Then, take the funnel and use it to add the solution in the container of the large bottle. The funnel is always useful to avoid splashing or wasting part of the solution. It will help you to work as clean as possible. As you transfer the mixture into the bottle container, leave it overnight in a cool place. This will also be useful for the solution to react with its components and, therefore, effectiveness will increase substantially.
The next day, it is time to transfer the mixture into the container of the smaller bottle. Again, use the funnel (clean it first), prepare a thin cloth or cheese cloth and pour the mixture into the bottle. Place the funnel in the bottle and place the cloth in the funnel. As you pour the solution into the bottle, it will filter and pour through the fabric and the funnel. You will end up with the main mix without the pit and the seeds. Squeeze the cloth to let more solution into the bottle and remove it.
A good use for the pit and seeds and other leftovers from this procedure can be used effectively against pests and pesky animals in your garden (if you have one).
Finally, the pepper spray is ready and should be stored in a cool place, ideally in the refrigerator. Thanks to vinegar / alcohol, the solution can last up to 3 months.
Here is a slightly simpler recipe for making a pepper spray.
Prepare the ingredients first. Take a little chili powder or hot pepper powder (see the SHU measures mentioned earlier in this article and try to find the hottest pepper). Collect liquid soap, lemon, black pepper, garlic powder and, finally, a container to spray.
First, mix the dry ingredients in a separate glass. Then start adding the liquid soap and squeeze a whole lemon into the mixture. Lemon and soap are irritating to the eyes and will increase the effectiveness of the final product.
The spray container, as indicated above, should not break anywhere or, if you can test it, make sure there are no leaks from anywhere. When you are sure of the safety of the spray container, add the previously prepared solution in the container and you will be ready. Use it only in a self-defense situation.
To see a simplified version of the previous recipe, you can watch this YouTube video on how to make a pepper spray.
In this YouTube video you can see the effect of a strong chili pepper or hot pepper solution. You can see that the most important element is the hot pepper / chili pepper and the alcohol in which it remains. You must spend the night in the solution of alcohol or vinegar for the effect to be stronger. The juices and chilli extract will increase a lot thanks to the alcohol / vinegar.
Finally, if possible, try the product on yourself or if someone from your closest friends is willing to try it for yourself, that would be best. It is always better to know that the spray is strong enough, than to expect the attacker or the aggressor to be knocked down, but instead, he / she only laughs at you and attacks you anyway.
Also, do not try the product with anyone who is confident or a joke. It can still cause temporary blindness and irritation. Do not play with it as a joke or animal test. Otherwise, we hope it will help you defend against predators and criminals.
