Meeting with a bear is dangerous for a person and you need to clearly understand what to do when meeting with a bear. Read the rules of behavior when meeting with a bear is to know how to avoid a bear attack, how to drive a bear away, how to escape from a bear, how to behave when meeting a bear while hunting not a bear. Understand how to defend against a bear, if it has already attacked, what to do if you suddenly meet a group of bears. Why not try to play with a teddy bear. Of course, the recommendations can not be considered as a kind of panacea, an absolute guarantee against an accident during the attack of the beast. But they will help reduce the probability of a conflict situation to a minimum.
The brown bear is a large predator, unusually strong and, of course, dangerous to humans. There is a high probability of conflict situations when a person and a bear meet. We must always remember that in places where bears are found, such a meeting can occur at any time and in any place, and you should be morally ready for this. The instruction on the rules of behavior when meeting with a bear is designed to help avoid such situations, and, if they occur, minimize negative consequences.
Remember: the best way to prevent conflict when meeting with a bear – this is to avoid meeting him!
Not without reason, even in survival instructions in extreme conditions, used in the preparation of commando groups consisting of thugs, commandos are always emphasized: never mess with bears!
If you are in a place where bears live
When moving, keep mostly open spaces and light forests, where the approach of the beast can be noticed in advance and take the necessary measures to scare away or otherwise protect yourself from a possible attack.
Avoid long-term advancement through dense thickets of cedar elfin, alder and willow in places of possible concentration of bears.
While traveling through the taiga and tundra, it is advisable not to use bearish trails. Also avoid driving on the shores of salmon rivers and along spawning grounds at dusk and at dawn, as well as at night. Remember: night – bear time!
If in the spring, when there is still snowing, you will come across a trail of a brown bear, turn back or try to go around the place where the beast is supposed to be in open places. The bear does not make long transitions in deep snow, so the track, even quite old, is a good indicator of its presence in the immediate vicinity.
To reduce the chance of being attacked by a bear, do not go to the grounds alone. The probability of aggression of the beast in relation to a group of people is much lower.
When meeting with brown bear do your best do not panic and quietly retire. Do not run! Remember that a bear has an unusually thin sense of smell, so when you depart it is necessary to take into account the direction of the wind.
If the beast noticed you and did not turn to flight, but on the contrary, shows curiosity, you should try to drive it away with a cry, a rocket, a shot in the air.
At a close encounter with a bear, do not look into his eyes intently. For any wild beast, a close look is a sign of an impending attack. He can attack in order, he believes, to prevent an attack from your side.
Cases where the bear does not threaten you yet
If you saw a bear from a car window – enjoy the view! Take a few snapshots of the memory, but in any case do not get out of the car. Do not try to treat a bear. Remember: by teaching him to beg, you sign a death sentence for him! Do not linger long, drive on.
Brown bears are desperate gluttons and gourmands. In order for bears and humans to coexist safely, animals should not have associations between the possibility of tasty food and human smell. It is almost impossible to wean the scavenger bear from consuming the food debris from the person’s table: losing fear, it usually becomes a marauder and a murderer.
In order to avoid the tragic consequences of changing the eating behavior of bears, one should always adhere to the principle: a bear is a forest and forest food, a person is a dwelling and a table.
Do not create around settlements, fishing, bases and camps, field parties, squads, tourist groups, on the halts and routes of garbage dumps, dumps, warehouses of food garbage, contributing to the concentration of animals. Bears have a well-developed sense of smell and easily detect and dig even organic remains buried at a considerable depth. Food waste is recommended to export (in case of impossibility of their disposal) at a considerable distance from the shelter. The dumping site should be clearly marked with signs, and locals should be warned about it. If garbage collection is impossible, food garbage should be destroyed – burned or drowned.
Do not store food and food in places easily accessible for looting: in unguarded linen tents, bags and boxes under the open sky. Packaging should exclude easy access to the contents: iron barrels from under the fuel with cut-down bottoms, which are then screwed with wire, as well as strong plank boxes edged with iron tape, are best suited. At the same time, it is desirable to raise barrels and boxes on purpose-built platforms (storage sites) or on tree branches and fix there. It is recommended to clear the branches of a warehouse or a tree trunk from branches to a height of 4 m and, if possible, wrap it with barbed wire.
Do not leave food and food waste accessible to wild animals near your home or camp. It is deadly. Clean and lack of garbage can save you from unwanted visits!
If you unexpectedly met a bear
Attention! If a Brown bear interested in you, you need to be ready to repel his possible attack.
Contrary to popular belief, a bear standing on its hind legs is not aggressively tuned. He just rises in order to thoroughly examine the surrounding terrain and see for himself what has already been reported to him by a good sense of smell and keen hearing. Most often, bears are found in places where they, like people, are busy getting food, i.e. fishing, hunting and picking berries. On the berries, bears tend to be calmer and do not protect the territory, especially if there are many berries. In most cases, you will not even guess his presence, because the sense of smell and hearing will warn the bear of your approach, and he will leave this place.
The place is convenient for fishing, the bear leaves much more reluctant – especially if he has already managed to catch some fish. Unfortunately, in the excitement and behind the sound of water, the beast may not notice your approach. Therefore, in order to avoid an undesirable meeting, make your movement loud enough. Speak loudly, whistle your favorite melody, tap the trees and bushes with a stick. However, if you did see a bear, then if possible, go unnoticed by him. And if he noticed you, then calmly retreat.
Remember that an unexpected and close (less than 5-7 m) encounter with a bear often provokes the beast to attack. Therefore, it is better to avoid such meetings, knowingly informing the bear of your approach.
The role of dogs when meeting with bears is ambiguous. On the one hand, an untrained dog, having discovered a bear with bear cubs, can rush to your side with a fright in search of protection, thereby provoking the bear to attack you. On the other hand, the dog accompanying you will always warn about the presence of a wild beast nearby, and if necessary, barking and biting will distract the bearish aggression towards itself, allowing you to leave.
If you see a bear sleeping or eating prey
No wonder they say: do not wake famously! Do not try to wake a clumsy – let him sleep. You should not linger for observations and photographs, no matter how comical a sleeping bear would seem to you. Quietly leave this place.
If you unexpectedly bumped into a bear in prey, then above all, keep calm! Show the bear that you didn’t come to steal his food. Stand tall and let you know when you are talking loudly.
Leave slowly and carefully the same way that you came. It is better not to turn your back to the beast. Keep him in sight and be prepared for the fact that at any moment he can show aggression. But in no case do not run while you are in the field of view of the animal!
In such cases, the development of the situation strongly depends on the distance. If the distance is small, then the bear disturbed in the prey will in most cases go into attack!
If you have found a curious little bear, then the best thing to do is to leave as soon as possible. Do not take pictures of it, in any case do not try to touch it. This is a wild beast, not a plush toy! Do not forget that the mother is most likely located nearby and is not disposed towards the jokes in relation to her child. Defending the bear, the bear will not scare you – she will try to kill you.
A hunter who quietly moves around the grounds puts himself at serious risk of a sudden encounter with a bear. If the bear did not notice you, then it is better to leave as imperceptibly. If for some reason this is not possible, clap your hands or somehow make a joke of the beast. A shot in the air helps well in this situation. But just in the air – the fact that you have a weapon in your hands does not mean that you can and should shoot a bear.
Shooting the beast in such a situation – this is the most stupid thing you can do. Almost all accidents occur when the animal is injured.
If you met a group of bears
No matter how undesirable you are to meet a single bear on the path, meeting with a group of these animals is even more undesirable. The fact is that groups of bears usually form in three cases:
- during the rut;
- during the period when the female walks with her own cubs;
- when young animals, driven off by a female for independent living, continue to walk for a while as a pair.
Unlike most large animals, the rut in bears occurs in the spring – almost from the moment of coming out of the den until the beginning of July. Bears during the rut are vicious, irritable and capable of completely unprovoked aggressive actions. And this applies to animals of both sexes. But large males in this period sometimes behave defiantly aggressive. They are ready to attack any large moving object, and often are not limited to demonstrations. However, the male responds primarily to the behavior of the female, and in the case of her leaving, retreats after her.
It is least dangerous to deal with young inexperienced animals. This does not mean that they do not exactly attack you if they are very close. Moreover, just such young and inexperienced beasts that have not learned to fear a person often turn out to be destroyers of the camps. And this is facilitated by just the feeling that they are not alone – the actions of one bear only provoke another – like minor hooligans in a gang.
Bear is coming to you
If a bear approaches you, this does not mean aggression on its part. Bears are weak-sighted and often the beast is suitable just to see an incomprehensible silhouette. Sometimes they come under the wind to smell your scent. As a rule, these approaches end with the fact that the bear is quickly removed, as soon as it realizes that there is a person in front of it.
To drive away a bear approaching or stubbornly following you at a distance can be loud and harsh sounds – for example, by striking a mug against a cooking pot, or better by a metal basin. Flares and rocket launcher – a very effective tool for scaring bears. You can shoot in the air. Acrid pepper sprays are a good remedy. Unfortunately, they are effective at a very small distance and only in the absence of a strong wind.
Attention! Against bears only special concentrated pepper-based aerosols are effective. Any other formulations (CS, CN, etc.), as well as low-concentration pepper formulations designed for defense against humans, have almost no effect on large predators.
You need to know that the bear is usually not sure about the need to attack either – he is afraid of you. Even throws in your direction – this is often an imitation of an attack, designed to make you retire. Do not show signs of aggression towards the bear, do not throw stones or sticks at it. Slowly leave this place and never run!
If everything is really bad and the bear attacks
If you are not armed or have low-powered weapons, the best thing is to try to divert attention. bear. Put something in front of you: a basket of berries, a backpack, a net, and other fishing gear.
If you have a cylinder with pepper composition, then spray it in front of the bear’s face, it is advisable to direct the stream into the eyes and mouth of the beast. If you didn’t manage to distract the bear, and you don’t have a balloon, then lie down on the ground in a fetal position or on the stomach. Keep your hands tight around your neck and protect your head. Pretend to be dead. There are many cases where attacking bears lost all interest in a motionless person. Do not move, even if it seems to you that the bear is not looking at you or that it is being removed. He continues to watch you hard. It is better to wait until he really leaves. This happens the sooner you become more immobile. So you seem to him less dangerous, and therefore, to a lesser extent, cause him a response.
If, in spite of all these measures, the bear begins to beat or nibble you, then fight back. Do not be afraid of pain, at this moment you will not feel it. The main thing is to save your life, and for this you need to stop the attack of the bear. Try to hit him as painfully as possible. Do not count on a fatal blow, beat on the eyes. If there is a knife – beat with a knife, aim in the eye. The main thing to remember is that in the seemingly desperate situation there is a chance, albeit a small one, and how you manage this chance depends on your life.
If you have a firearm, then do not rush to use it. It is necessary to firmly know that only a weapon can be used to defend against a bear, which can stop the attacking beast. To do this, it must have sufficient power.
For this purpose, carbines of calibers are considered to be the minimum acceptable for this purpose. 7.62Х51 (.308Win.), 7,62Х54R, 7.62X63 (30_06 Sprng), 8X57. Any carbines with a caliber of 9 mm and more are much preferable in this situation.
It is desirable that the cartridges were equipped with heavy expansive bullets. Perfectly proved in such cases, smooth-bore guns with a caliber of at least 16th and 12th, charged with heavy caliber bullets. Do not believe the fairy tales that the bear can be killed from melkashki. The use of inappropriate weapons can only exacerbate a conflict situation, and not save you.
Remember: shot – The most extreme measure during a meeting with a brown bear. However, you can only use weapon suitable power.
It is preferable to hit an attacking bear at the shortest distance – no more than five meters, when the chances of missing it are minimized. Never shoot at the head of an attacking beast. Try to keep cool.
Remember: composure will save your life!
