Pike fishing in the summer and winter

Many fishermen love to hunt pike. The excitement of catching this fish is associated with its cunning habits, the complexity of the fishing process, which is due to the caution of this predator, as well as strong resistance from his side when he gets into the gear of the fisherman. Among the many ways to catch this fish, catching a pike on a trap stands out. Since the wide distribution of this trap, since the 80s, many varieties of the pike trap, including self-made models, have appeared.

Pike trapping: video, features

The trap on the pike is made of solid stainless steel with a thickness of 3 mm, the mechanism is triggered when the predator pecks at the lure installed inside it. The design of the trap is quite simple: it consists of two rows of pointed teeth, located above and below, of a spring, a gatehouse and a fishing line. When the mechanism is triggered, the upper tooth remains stationary, and the lower row of teeth changes its position, moving up and down, causing injury to the fish. The guard is attached to the upper teeth, inside it is a hole for fastening the fishing line through the hinge. A lanyard or mono-wall can be attached to the gatehouse, which are used to hold the valve in the water.

The spring creates pressure on the structure; when the trap is triggered, the spring releases a hook that slam down with a different force depending on the degree of spring stiffness. Traps are of various types and modifications, some models are quite large, their weight reaches 20 kg. The design of the trap is simple, and therefore durable, reliable. The result of catching a trap will always be more effective than if the fishermen caught a pike with a bait, because a predator cannot escape from this trap. The trap allows you to catch pike of any size and weight.

In order for the trap to work efficiently, it is necessary to follow the rules for its placement:

  • The most successful place for placing the trap is the washed-out shore and reed thickets.
  • Pike is a very careful predator, so it is easier to catch it in a pond where a small number of fishermen are fishing.
  • Attractive places for pike fishing are small bodies of water with a deep, uneven bottom, muddy shores, and a large number of coals.

The trap is good because you can hunt pike with it at any time of the year, but the most successful fishing will be in the fall and spring, during zhora. In winter and summer, pike fishing on a trap has its own characteristics.

Pike fishing in winter

pike trappingIn winter, the pike trap is installed in the drilled hole, right at the bottom. The trap is attached to the fishing line and lowered into the hole. The length of the fishing line depends on the depth of the reservoir. The second end of the fishing line or lace is tied to a long stick, which is placed across the hole. The success of winter fishing on a trap will depend on the mobility of the bait and well chosen place on the reservoir.

The advantage of fishing trap in the winter is that usually the fish comes across is very large, but it must be interested in active live bait, because the predator itself is not active at this time of year.

Pike fishing in the summer

In the summer, it is necessary to set a trap in places of active feeding of pike, best of all – in shallow water and under the snags. The trap is charged with live bait, and is attached to some static object, for example, to a branch of a tree or a stick stuck in the bottom. Tying a trap is necessary so that the fish will not drag it along when they try to escape. When the trap is installed, it is necessary to periodically check it and change the bait if necessary. The bait must be alive.

In spring and autumn, the most favorable time comes for predator fishing: after spawning and warming of water, as well as during the beginning of the zhora period in September and October. Installation of the trap in the spring should be done on overgrown areas of the reservoir in a warm, calm, but overcast weather. In the fall, the fish is activated in the early morning or late evening.

Trap installation process

In the video you can see the installation process trap. Live fish of small size, up to 10 cm, is used as bait. It should be slightly smaller than the size of the lower tooth. The bait is placed on the lower tooth from the upper float to the gills. The tine should not be visible from the body of the bait. The trap is set as follows:

  1. The upper tooth is clamped with a clamp so that it becomes motionless.
  2. The bait is put on the lower tooth. Its width should be two or three times less than the distance between the upper and lower jaws of the trap.
  3. The trap is attached to a fishing line or wire, the other end of which is attached to the pole.
  4. The pole is inserted under a bias into the bottom of the reservoir, a trap is attached to its part remaining above the water.
  5. The trap is lowered into the water, it is monitored.

If there is no opportunity to sit and watch the hunting process, you can leave a trap and come in one or several days.

When catching a trap, you must observe the following precautions:

  1. Working with the trap should be done very carefully, because there is a high risk of injury due to haste or inattention when baiting or during the installation of the trap.
  2. You need to hold the hook at the base of the spring, turning the design of the sharp end away from you.
  3. You need to have a pliers, which will be useful to correct the false triggering of the trap.
  4. In winter, you must wear special gloves to work with the bait and device.

In case of unforeseen circumstances, you must have a first aid kit.
