The dagger is good for whoever it is

Many people, relatively knowledgeable in sniper weapons, do not understand, why is another complicated and surprisingly accurate rifle needed? The answer, no matter how paradoxical it may sound, is that – because. Because there is no in modern foreign, and serial and small-scale production of rifles, which in combat conditions would show the same accuracy as “Lobaev” SVLC-14S. No, and in the near future will not appear.

Deservedly SVLC-14S able to evaluate and former army sniper Sergei, who participated in the shooting. The characteristics of the special version of the SVLK-14S almost two or three times overlap the characteristics of all American and European rifles. Record at 3400: how it was

All week there was precipitation and the wind was blowing, sometimes reaching a storm. On April 9, 2015, the weather forecast promised the only sunny day, on which it was decided to make a trip with a possible attempt to set a new world record for firing range.

The crew of Lifenews, designed to fix this event, arrived in an expanded format. The guys were very serious: they armed themselves with 6 cameras and a quadcopter and the whole farm was managed by the main director of the channel.

By the arrival of guests everything was ready. Let me remind you: as a weapon for setting a record, the custom version was used SVLC-14C – model execution that differs from the base: a lodge, a titanium tire, a titanium drummer, a custom coating and a short barrel with a length of 780mm.

This barrel due in conjunction with our new bullet D30 gave almost the same speed as the base SVLC-14S with a long barrel.

The sight was used proven – IOR Valdada 5.8-40x with the expense of the amendment 100 MOA. Its high multiplicity is convenient for accurate aiming at long ranges, and the correction is sufficient for firing up to 2300m, but this, however, only on rifles SVLC-14. Any other rifle of the world in this caliber will require a sight with a large expense of the amendment.

Improvements after the first trial shooting affected the increase in height and slope of the bar. The previous version did not provide sufficient slope for shooting at 3400m. The last two hundred meters “eat up” almost 100MOA amendments and we did not have enough 30 minutes. Also, the height of the first bar was insufficient – the sight snatched the edge of the muzzle brake, which gave the picture a characteristic haze, although it did not block the aiming.

Choosing between making a new bar and using the existing adjustable 400 MOA, we stopped at a rigid milled bar to exclude additional factors with a guarantee, such as: the possible mobility of the bar being not yet tested.

The bar was made immediately with a margin of 260 MOA, in order to be able, if necessary, to shoot a little farther.

The high bar caused the transfer of the back plate to a new height, which required the manufacture of a special adapter. This simple measure made the application and the shooting itself as comfortable as possible.

To shoot a record, we decided to try our new D30 bullets. With a mass similar to the American J40, they differ in geometry and have a higher manufacturing accuracy, which has a positive effect on the accuracy of fire. Slightly greater completeness of bullets (diameter of the leading part) in combination with a channel adapted for it allowed for a short barrel to get a speed of more than 900 m / s without excess pressure, which brought the rifle in this “short” version to the performance of the base long 900 mm barrel on a standard SVLC-14.

The plan for shooting was the following: check the angle of the bar; “Reset” the system; if there is time, shoot a record.

The event together with the preparation took the whole daylight hours. At noon, we left the place. Installing cameras at the target, shooting the porch and panoramic views using a quadrocopter took several hours.

In order not to lose time, we whiled it over calculating the amendments. This is where the fun began. Judging by the calculator, we only had to set 22 MOA under the derivation. The wind, often changing direction to the opposite, cost 25 MOA. Thus, the obvious tactic of working with the wind was drawn. In order not to add an amendment and not make a breathtaking almost 50 minutes of horizontal amendment, a “red” condition was chosen, to compensate for which, it was necessary to make ridiculous 3 MOA. She and shot. “Green” just came less often, replacing the short 12-hour counter-condition. The wind on the ordinate was read by us as 3 m / s, which was fully confirmed by shooting.

I must say that all the calculated data are 100% (!) Fully confirmed by shooting, with an accuracy of half a minute. It was unexpected.

In fact, due to the infrequent shooting practice, I developed a childhood illness – distrust of the calculator. So much so that I did not add the required 3 MOA to the flywheel, considering that I didn’t take it into account anyway. Also, I didn’t add an extra half-minute vertical, as required by the smart calculator.

This led to the fact that when we started shooting we had an undershoot and 10 meters to the left. It was not immediately detected by the target team, since it was in the shelter, and even to the side of the target, and could more or less see the hits practically within a radius of 10 meters from the target.

Also, due to the terrain, we were not able to observe the blunders ourselves, although the weather and a moderate mirage would allow even a 40-fold sight, and shot almost blindly, relying on very approximate information about blunders, such as: “ undershoot, somewhere near, and so on. Thus, in the adjustment of the fire to rely on the target team was not necessary.

Taking a small take-out up and to the right, we immediately became attached. The bullet passed 70-80 cm to the left of the edge of the shield, falling 4 meters behind the target. The following three shots are located in front of the target at a distance of 20, 10 and 1 meter respectively. Landmarks, after firing, dug into the places of hitting the ground, showed that they were all in the alignment of the target, that is, the work on reading the wind was done by my “second” number not just “excellent”, but “excellent”. The vertical in the form of hits in front of the target reflected the real picture of finding the right upward lift.

We understood that we were very close to hitting the target and the next, 5th shot, it happened – it flew to the bottom of the target for 6 hours. It was made by the removal, accurately reflecting the original calculation data from the calculator, which I was too lazy to bring to the sight.

After mutual congratulations, we went to inspect the target and it was harder than shooting a record. Spring bogs and wet mash of collective farm fields made the path to the target impassable for cars. The motorcycle was alone, and it was necessary to drag the cameras and the rifle for selfies and quietly hope that everything was in order with the camera at the target. The whole process of moving back and forth, together with shooting on the spot, took several hours.

But it is precisely in the course of such a path, to the target and back, that it begins to reach you, what is all the same – a range of 3400 meters.

In the small Russian town of Tarusa on the banks of the Oka, two hours drive from Moscow, in a small one-story building there is an amazing company “Tsar-cannon.” Even if she had put the production of those king-cannons on stream, she would not have become more amazing. “Tsar Cannon” is known among professionals of high-precision shooting with its rifles. The most accurate in Europe. No more, no less.

Among people who can easily get from a distance of a kilometer, so to say, to a soccer ball, Vladislav Lobayev is a famous person. Almost permanent judge of the majority of shooting competitions for long distances, participants of which are forbidden to take pictures, he himself at first gives the impression of a person “from structures”. Although neither in the army, nor in other power structures, as they say, “did not consist”.

Nevertheless, he says a little sparingly about his past: they say, he got carried away with shooting at long distances – with a benchrest, and when he started shooting at the world championships, he ran into problems with the materiel. I went to America, completed an internship with Spidi Gonzalez and Clay Spencer, returned to Russia, founded the Tsar Cannon company, received a license for the production of rifled weapons at the Federal Agency for Industry, bought several million dollars of high-precision equipment in America and now does the best in Europe rifles. It’s simple. I just want to note that not every hobby brings to the world championships in precision shooting. Learning to make rifles from Spidi Gonzalez (this is not a cartoon racer and hero of a popular song) or from Clay Spencer is no easier than machine guns, say, from Mikhail Kalashnikov.

To get a private license in Russia in general, no one except Vladislav managed, as, incidentally, to bring a arms factory into the country in private, even a small one.

Well, the question of where to talk with the owners of his rifles, Lobayev immediately sent to Presidential Security Service. And, what is even more incredible, in the Service, having heard the name Lobaeva, they did not refuse comments. Work with material

Theoretically, there are only two models of Tsar Cannon rifles – OVL (hunting / experimental Lobayev rifle) and SVL (sniper / Lobaev special rifle). Practically – an uncountable number, since Lobayev makes rifles to order. You can say everything: barrel length, caliber, bolt group, bed, pitch, compensator, muzzle brake, etc. You can just bring a bullet, and you will make a rifle just for that bullet. Vladislav himself does not decipher the abbreviations for a long time. Just if “OVL” is written on the trunk, then the customer is a private person. If “SVL” – special structures.

“Tsar Cannon” works only with stainless steels, or rather, with the 416R and 416T brands, if this tells you something. Other stainless steels, in fact, for the production of trunks and do not apply. “We work only with stainless steels, and not because we cannot work with any other,” says Lobayev. – Just a stainless steel has the desired corrosion and wear resistance. From the point of view of the resource and the preservation of performance – today the perfect material. ” What are the difficulties of working with stainless steel? This is high alloy steel, it is harder than traditional stem steel and requires a more wear-resistant tool.

Became, as a rule, American or German. In principle, domestic steel could also be used – Zlatoust, for example, undertook to cook this, but in very large volumes that the Tsar Cannon simply could not master. More profitable to import.

By the way, if you see the Russian barrel of stainless steel, then it can only be “Tsar Cannon” – no other company of the trunks does this metal. And in all of Europe there are still only two firms: the German Lothar Walther and the Scottish Border Barrels. All other European trunnion manufacturers make trunks with a maximum of mild chrome-molybdenum steel.


Steel comes in the form of six-meter rods, which are cut into the desired pieces. Initially, the blanks are rather uneven, so they are ordered with an allowance for the groove and are turned on a lathe to the ideal cylinder of the desired diameter. The maximum barrel length that the Tsar Cannon can drill on its equipment is 95 cm. All production equipment is American, which can be easily explained: there are several hundred (!) Manufacturers of high-precision barrels and rifles in the USA, and this industry is developed like nowhere else the world. In addition, the art of making such rifles Vladislav comprehended it in America.

After the blanks are turned to the desired diameter, they are inserted into a duplex drilling machine, where you can simultaneously handle a couple of shafts. The special tool is used – drills of deep drilling. In the “Tsar Cannon” there is practically the whole range of calibers: .22, .25, .270, .234 (6 mm), 7 mm, 6.5 mm, .30 (7.62 mm), .338 (8, 6 mm) and .408 (10.3 mm). The 408th caliber is Lobaev’s pride. “In Europe, we make it the only ones. This is not to walk on elephants, but for shooting at 2? 3 km, ”adds Vladislav.

The main problem in this operation is moving the tool away from the drilling axis. They struggle with it by choosing the right mode of processing (feed rate and speed) and – most importantly – the correct sharpening of the drill. This is generally a key operation – if the sharpener becomes ill, production may stop.

One drill without regrinding, depending on the grade of steel, can withstand from 10 to 50 shafts. A set of a pair of drills costs $ 1500? 2000, and with proper care, they live almost forever. From Soviet times there are bikes that the best trunks are the first of the party, drilled with a single drill. This is nonsense, explains Vladislav Lobayev, since drilling is an important, but preliminary, and not final, treatment of the bore.

After drilling the barrel is marked. For example, 338 is a caliber, then 323 is a drill diameter, 330 is a sweep diameter, 3415 is a mandrel, 12 is a pitch and 75 is a batch process number by which a company can track the fate of a particular trunk. For example, if a barrel shoots well and records a minimal response to the wind, it is possible to restore the technology and make a twin by marking. From one batch (1.5? 2 tons), 240? 320 barrels are obtained.

Drilling out

The sweep – the next one of the most critical operations – forms the final diameter of the trunk over the fields. It is produced on an exact lathe tool, which is called – sweep. We can say that this is a precision drilling of the barrel. When scanning is not so critical, setting the barrel, as the tool goes through the already drilled channel. By the way, unlike drills, sweeps on the Tsar Cannon are done by themselves, which gives a wide scope for maneuver.

But that’s not all. The next operation is honing. Under each barrel is made abrasive hon, which is pulled through the channel, performing coarse polishing.

Do you chop?

The process of applying the rifling is called mandrel The machine is a horizontal press with a copier, which sets the pitch of the rifling. If it is simpler, the machine, smoothly rotating, pulls through the barrel bore a carbide mandrel of very high hardness (70? 80 units on the Rockwell hardness scale; steel for the trunk, for example, has a hardness of 32? 34 units) with protruding grooves. This is a one-time operation, which literally in ten seconds forms a rifling method of pressure. Before pulling the mandrel, a special lubricant is applied to the internal bore to reduce friction, the composition of which is a professional secret of each barrel manufacturer and is kept secret.

Each caliber and pitch (plus or minus inch) requires a separate mandrel. For example, under the 30th caliber there is a mandrel at a pitch of 12 inches. This means that the machine can be cut in increments of 11 to 13 inches.

Dorn is the most expensive position of the whole tool of the gunsmith and, depending on the caliber, costs from $ 1000 to 3000. Dorn is a long-liver. If it is properly looked after (and after each pass, the mandrels are re-polished to remove possible microsysters), then it may be enough for several thousand trunks.

The advantage of this technology for the formation of rifling is that it creates a surface consolidation of the bore, which in turn has a beneficial effect on the resource and resistance to temperature effects. Minus – the inevitability of internal stresses that have to be removed. If you are not able to relieve stress, then the formation of rifling by the method of burnishing is the way to nowhere, says Lobaev. This is know-how.

In words, everything is very simple – heating to a certain temperature, and then cooling. Temperatures are selected individually for different steel grades. If you let go strongly – we lose vitality, the trunk will become more plastic. If you hold a greater hardness – you can not let go of tension, and the barrel will bend after several shots under the influence of temperature, resembling trunks made using rotational forging technology.

Cutting in the “Tsar Cannon” is the fastest process – just ten seconds. Drilling, for example, takes an hour – an hour and twenty, and deployment takes about thirty minutes.

In the furnace!

After cutting, almost finished barrels are installed vertically and sent to a vacuum oven. The principle of tempering is simple – at first, the trunks gradually heat up to a certain temperature, are kept at it, and then cool down smoothly, and all this happens in a vacuum. If you do the same thing in the air, it will no longer be a vacation, but a hardening of the metal. And Lobaev, we recall, does not checkers, but rifles.


The next operation – grinding the trunk. Lead priter is melted for it, having the form of a corresponding mandrel, a special abrasive composition is applied on it, which the craftsmen prepare themselves, and each barrel is polished by hand. Everything. This is the most final finish polishing. The operation, by the way, is extremely critical for the quality of the barrel, allowing to obtain different geometry – for example, barrel cones or sockets. Gate groups

The two main components in high-precision shooting are the bullet and the barrel. Everything else in the rifle should not degrade their qualities, Lobaev said. For example, the shutter. “This is my shutter does not worsen. This is my pride – our new development, our own bolt group. In particular, it now stands on rifles, adopted by one of the domestic law enforcement agencies. Although we do everything – we have a full production cycle. We can make any bolt group in the world by order, simply by repeating it. ” The new bolt group was designed to accept the .408 and .338 caliber cartridges and other smaller “magnums”.

How Lobaev managed to get his blessing, only he knows, but the “Tsar Cannon” places his trunks in the design box of Speedy Gonzales himself. Better recommendations in the world simply do not exist. “Previously, we made a bed of three materials: fiberglass, carbon fiber and Kevlar carbon,” Vladislav shows a huge collection of multi-colored lodges on the wall of the shop, “but now we’ve only focused on carbon and Kevlar carbon. Only one company from the United States in the world makes a benchrest box of carbon fiber in the world, and Kevlar-Carbon, which is even stronger, only we, nobody wants to get involved with it: it is badly cut and milled. ” Lobayeva has something to be proud of – the European Championship was won in his boxes.


Rifles from Lobaeva – pleasure is not cheap, although no alternative. “If our rifle shoots in the competition, then everyone else is fighting for second place,” Vladislav categorically cuts. “Since we started working, not a single major competition in either sniping or benchrest in Russia has been won by our rifle.” Indeed, if we take 2008, in the European Benchrest Championship two gold medals in the overall standings and in the “heavy warmint” class took Igor Zhukov from Novosibirsk just from the Lobaev rifle.

However, even if there is such money and desire, one should not rush to Tarusa – until the end of the year Lobaeva’s company does not accept orders from individuals, because it’s inundated with orders from special forces. Say what you like, and ultra-long-range shooting is a purely applied sport intended for practicing technologies that are later used by military and police structures. In the US, the same thing – the legends of the benchrest basically make weapons not for competition, but for power structures.

The day is ending, it’s time to get back to Moscow. Vladislav and I are standing on the porch of his small factory near Tarusa. It is clear weather, the provincial atmosphere somehow relaxes and pacifies. “Why Tarusa? – asks Lobaev. – Yes, I just have a summer cottage here. And slyly squints in the sun.

The story has an equally incredible sequel. Before leaving, I asked Vladislav to give the phone to some reputable shooter shooting a Lobaev rifle. Vladislav gave the phone a person from Presidential Security Services. I have worked for more than ten years in journalism and I can authoritatively state that it is much more difficult to get a comment from such a specialist than, for example, Putin or Medvedev. Nevertheless, a few days later I was sitting in one of the bases of the special forces in a cozy office, a pair of lobyev rifles lay on a leather couch, and a pleasant middle-aged man who asked to designate him simply as a “president’s security sniper” told me about Lobaev’s relations with this very service.

Little about our specifics

As a rule, when performing a task, a sniper deals with fixed ranges of a shot: he has the ability to measure the distance, introduce corrections into the scope, and at the right moment make a shot. We, in fact, are hunters for snipers, and we don’t have either preparation time or fixed ranges: we must hit targets instantly in the entire range of ranges – from the minimum to the maximum. But our opponent is ready to shoot. Therefore, we must equalize the chances both at the expense of a higher level of our training, and at the expense of better equipment – in particular, weapons.

One of the problems we have encountered is the lack of computer programs in ballistics, ballistic calculators that satisfy us. We began to look for specialists who could write such a program for us, study the market, and came across Lobaev’s ballistic calculator, which at that time already helped calculate accurate shots from distances up to 3 km. We contacted him and began to cooperate. When we started using the redesigned calculator, we encountered some problems: the program calculates corrections for a shot at a distance of up to 3 km, and our weapon (we then had Finnish and British rifles) does not fire at such a range. Accuracy in the calculations – hundredths and thousandths of angular minutes (MOA), and our rifles have a technical dispersion of half a minute.

Actually, with the question about the trunks for which the calculator is designed, we turned to Lobaev. As it turned out, he had already made such trunks for sports purposes. Our cooperation has spread to weapons.

After a while we got rifles made just for our needs. At first, when we appeared with them on tasks and competitions, we smiled at our colleagues equipped with foreign weapons. It took several years and several series of convincing victories in professional competitions for smiles to pass.

Improved themselves rifles. At first it was for the most part a civilian benchrest rifle. Now it is a special-purpose rifle adapted for use in special conditions and at the same time showing fantastic accuracy. After the Lobaev’s rifle, it’s even boring to pick up a Finnish or British one. As a result of our cooperation, we received a rifle that meets the standards of the Presidential Security Service. And there are simply no higher standards.

With such a rifle, I hit the first and second shots in a circle with a diameter of 45 cm from a distance of 1600 m. And this is not the limit – in a larger caliber you can shoot far away. And I think that at the moment there is simply no competition for Lobayeva in Russia.
