Classes with schoolchildren – what to do if you get lost in the forest, the order of behavior and actions.

In the form of such a peculiar lesson-game, it is very convenient to work with schoolchildren, teach them survival skills and then take tests. It turns out very clearly, interestingly and not boringly. The methodology was tested and proved to be excellent during the ten-day classes on the basics of survival with students in the fifth to tenth grades of schools and lyceums in the Kiev region.

Classes-game with schoolchildren in three parts of Adventures of the Mushroom picker or what to do if you get lost in the forest, the order of behavior and actions.

Part 1.

I decided somehow Gribnik for a weekend to go pick up mushrooms, he loved them very much. Moreover, the weather is not very hot, slightly autumn, it’s really cold at night, but he was not going to stay at night, back and forth there. He got up early, got into the car and drove into the same mushroom forest, so the neighbors suggested the cottage there, although he himself had never been there before. He arrived at the place at dawn, at seven in the morning, sat and talked with the neighbors, left the car in their country house, packed up and went mushrooming at 9.00. And since he expected to walk only until noon and return, he didn’t especially dress and did not take anything extra with him, but only.

Gribnik cut off his staff and went through the forest to look for mushrooms. He walked for a long time, looked attentively, but found nothing but mushrooms and grebes. He was upset and sat down to eat. He ate both sandwiches, washed down with mineral water, looked at his watch, and by 15.30, it was time to return and go home. Only here is where to go, which way to return?

I have a mobile one … now I’ll call and ask … Gribnik was delighted.

However, the joy was premature, there was no coverage of the mobile network in that area. Gribnik sat down and began to remember everything that he knew about orienting in the forest and in general, but except for something about stumps, the dark bark of trees, their crown and anthills with lichens, he did not remember. However, there was nothing like this around, neither stumps, nor anthills, nor lichens. And the crowns of the trees seem to be the same on all sides. Then he took out a mushroom picker and began to eat it leisurely, trying to remember something useful and suitable in this situation..

And remembered. Like on a picnic, one of his friends showed him how to determine the cardinal points with the help of an ordinary stick and the sun. So he did, soon identifying the cardinal points. Mushroom picker has risen markedly.

So … when I went out, the sun only showed itself above the trees, so it went east, and in order to return it is necessary to go west … and we have the west there … I’ll go out somewhere to meet people….

It is said to be done, Gribnik went west, to the people and his car, so he assumed….

Test yourself by answering security questions.

1. What mistakes did Gribnik make when he realized that he was lost?
2. What should Gribnik remember about orienting in the forest on local subjects and how reliable is it?
3. What kind of method did Mushroom picker use to determine cardinal points?
4. Whether in the right direction Gribnik decided to go out to people?

End of Part One.

Answers and analysis with schoolchildren of mistakes made by Mushroom picker.

1. What mistakes did Gribnik make when he realized that he was lost?

Any food available must be protected. Chocolate had to be preserved until better times. If you get lost, then immediately you need to introduce austerity regime in relation to the stocks of water and food that are with you.

2. What should Gribnik remember about orienting in the forest on local subjects and how reliable is it?

The bark of most trees is coarser and darker on the north side, thinner and more elastic (birches are lighter) on the south.
On coniferous trees, resin accumulates more abundantly from the south side..
Annual rings on fresh tree stumps are densely located on the north side..
On the north side, trees, stones, earlier and more abundantly covered with lichens, fungi.
Anthills are located on the southern side of trees, stumps and bushes, in addition, the southern slope of the anthills is gentle, the northern steep.
In detached trees, the crowns are more magnificent and thicker on the south side.

But you must remember! The determination of the sides of the horizon by local objects is carried out only in combination with other more reliable methods. The determination of the sides of the horizon only by local objects leads to very large and critical errors, and sometimes it is not at all possible.

3. What kind of method did Mushroom picker use to determine cardinal points?

Just stick a stick at least 1 meter long into the ground. Mark the end of the shadow, this is the first point in the figure indicated by a green circle. Wait at least 15 minutes and mark the second point at the end of the shadow in the figure indicated by a red circle. Connect the first and second points, while the point of the first shadow will show the direction to the west, and the second to the east. A line drawn from the base of the stick at right angles to the existing east-west line will indicate the direction to the north. However, it should be remembered that this method is most accurate in the southern regions in summer and winter, less accurate in spring and autumn. And completely unsuitable during the days of the winter and summer solstice.

4. Whether in the right direction Gribnik decided to go out to people?

In general, the direction of movement was chosen by Gribnik intuitively correctly, but do not forget one moment the Sun really rises approximately in the east, but Gribnik saw it already at 9.00 in the morning and two hours have passed since the appearance of the Sun over the horizon. Given the angle of rotation of the Earth or the apparent displacement of the Sun (15 degrees / hour), the error is about 30 degrees, that is, almost southeast.

Therefore, having decided to go strictly to the west, theoretically Gribnik made a mistake in the direction of movement, especially since he did not take into account the fact that all this time he was moving not in an ideal straight line. This is due to the fact that the man’s left step is 0.1-0.4 mm longer than the right one, and walking straight without landmarks, he more and more deviates to the right, sooner or later returning to the starting point of his route, making a circle of approximately diameter 3.5 km.

In practice, this problem has no solution, the chances of returning to the starting point under these conditions tend to zero if you do not initially orient yourself and periodically control your direction of movement. The mushroom trajectory will look something like this.

Then classes with schoolchildren are held as follows, after a short break, the second theoretical part of the lesson and after lunch the third, practical part of the lesson.
