The prototypes of modern folding knives appeared, most likely, already in the Middle Ages, and the first household tools with a folding blade existed in the Bronze Age. There are many different types of folding knives, including multi-knife ones, but in this case we will consider only knives that can be classified as combat folding knives.
Combat folding knives, design features, combat folding knives based on the Philippine Bolizong knife.
Folding knife design has certain advantages. The main ones are compactness, safety and lack of need for a sheath. The disadvantages of folding knives include the longer, compared with conventional knives, the time required to bring the knife into combat condition. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the lower structural strength of folding knives, as well as the limitation of the length of the blade, which should fit in the handle.
According to the method of removing the blade, combat folding knives can, with a high degree of conventionality, be divided into several groups. The first group includes folding knives, the blade of which must be removed with the help of the second hand; the blade usually has a special notch for the nail. This method is not the best solution for a combat knife.
The second group includes combat folding knives, the blade of which can be removed with one hand, with the help of the thumb holding the knife. On the blade of the knife for this there is a special pin or hole.
The third group consists of combat folding knives with a blade popping out of the handle under the influence of a spring when a button is pressed. The so-called button knives. The blade of such folding knives can pop out of the handle straight forward or around the circumference.
Separately, we highlight the so-called “butterfly” knives – combat folding knives based on the Philippine Bolizong knife. The bolizong handle consists of two halves, hinged to the base of the blade. When folded, the blade hides between these halves.

In a combat position, the halves of the handle of this knife rotate 180 degrees, freeing its blade. There are several ways to open a folding knife type “bolizong” with one hand.
