Features of movement in mountainous areas in an emergency or extreme situation.

Walking in the mountains at random in order to shorten the path is extremely unacceptable, as this can lead to severe irreparable consequences, for example, access to a steep scree with vertical ledges, impassable rocky sections, large glacial cracks, deep canyons with sheer walls, etc..

Features of movement in mountainous areas in an emergency or extreme situation.

Of great importance for movement in mountainous areas is the surface of mountain slopes: rocky, with or without vegetation, the steepness of the slope, the presence of snow and ice, talus and rocky areas. It may turn out that a person or group of people who find themselves in the mountains as a result of an accident in a car or an aircraft (airplane, helicopter, glider, balloon) are completely unfamiliar with the technique of movement in the mountains.

, formed by a large accumulation of dry fresh snow.

If it is possible to choose a route in the avalanche danger zone, it is preferable to move along the slope covered with bushes or trees, with outcrops of bedrock, and avoid steep narrow valleys and gorges. It is best to overcome the avalanche slopes early in the morning. And the descent into the valley is best done along a gentle ridge without going out onto steep slopes. If there is a need to go down the scree, then by no means straight down, but obliquely with a serpentine, putting your foot on the whole foot, having previously tested the stone for stability.

To move along the talus at intervals and so as not to be above each other because of the possibility of throwing a stone on the head below the walker, it must be borne in mind that a steep talus can come in motion from a loud scream, or careless movement on it, or from dropped stones. In case of a talus collapse in a mountainous area, a possible shelter must be planned in advance. If the scree is not visible until the end or it is very steep, then moving down it dangerously can end in a cliff. Some supposedly mountain trails are not such, as they are formed due to soil slipping and do not lead anywhere, but can also be trodden by mountain goats and lead to steep cliffs.

Driving through a narrow canyon is dangerous. It is possible to hit steep sections that cannot be avoided due to the steepness of the slopes. When entering a wide mountain valley, a gorge with a stream or river, you must move downstream with preliminary exploration of the path for the possibility of movement along the coast. Are there overhanging cliffs and waterfalls. If you need to wade through a mountain river, you should do this in the early morning hours, as the water level in these hours is minimal and increases sharply only by noon due to the melting of snow and ice under the sun. When crossing a mountain stream, the point of crossing should be chosen in places of greatest spill, where the flow is most calm.

But keep in mind that the bottom with fine sand is dangerous. The sand is abundantly saturated with water and can suck a person in the same way as a quagmire in a swamp. The absence of breakers and whirlpools suggests that the bottom is flat, but in this place it can be quite deep. Having found a suitable place for crossing, the river is crossed obliquely, upstream and facing it. They rearrange the leg, without pulling it out of the water, smoothly and without jerking, so as not to lose balance. After each day’s transition, there should be a good rest, which is possible only with the organization of a normal camp, protected from wind, avalanches and rockfall.
