So far, we are constantly spinning near-fixtures from DMT and others, offering good versatility in terms of a variety of sharpened and grinded blades, but one-sided in terms of choosing the grain size of the abrasive. Simply put, offering the user one single degree of grit. Is it possible to somehow expand this range?
Folding double-sided diamond sharpeners DMT and Lansky Sharpeners, for dressing and sharpening knives, axes, shovels and saws in the field.
You can, why not! If there are double-sided abrasive plates coated with diamond powder with varying degrees of grit on each side, then why not make the same plate portable? Moreover, if its base is a rather thin, but at the same time rigid block made of durable plastic, on the surface of which thin and, therefore, light steel plates coated with diamond powder are fixed. And if you attach a handle of two halves to them, like a butterfly knife, into which a double-sided abrasive plate would be removed in an inoperative, transport position, then it would have been very cool.
Well, hurray, warehouse! how did the cartoon Sharik from Prostokvashino say it? Or Eureka! as Archimedes used to say in such cases, which in translation means I found !? Well, yes, it’s not just you and I who have just found, but long before us. Portable field sharpening and sharpening devices operating according to this simple principle are now offered by many manufacturers. And it is precisely this design, in my opinion, that best suits the traveling conditions. Judge for your own merits.
Light weight with high sharpening efficiency and versatility once. Compact dimensions with two working surfaces that are sufficient for field conditions. Simplicity of work with diamond abrasives, their unpretentiousness in use and ease of cleaning after the end of work three. Work safety thanks to the convenient, full-sized handle. Four transport safety due to excellent insulation of abrasive surfaces from possible contact with surrounding objects. Disadvantages? Ah, yes it is impossible to sharpen serrated and concave blades, what a pity. Well, so don’t take them with you on a hike and deal with the end!
If it is wise to approach the acquisition of your camping equipment and exclude all sorts of tricky blades from it, then those normal ones can be perfectly sharpened and ground with the help of DMT, a lightweight, versatile, easy-to-use tool from Double Sided Diafold. Two diamond abrasive surfaces in one DMT significantly expand the possibilities of its application, and their length of 110 mm with a width of 24 mm provides high sharpening efficiency.
DMT weighs 70 grams. The manufacturer offers various combinations, from coarse-grained / coarse-grained (x-coarse / coarse) I would advise you to refuse. If you will be reckless to bring your knife or ax to such a state that you need to sharpen it with a coarse-grained abrasive, then you will not be able to do this by working on your knee with a portable device. I also don’t recommend taking a very fine-grained diamond along with an exceptionally fine-grained ceramic, you can indulge in such pampering at home for a short time from boredom.
Going on the road, I would advise you to choose between coarse / fine (coarse / fine) and very fine / fine (x-fine / fine). When traveling in a slightly larger group, you can take both with you. Most of the work will be found for the fine (fine) – easy grinding of knives and dressing axes. Very fine-grained (x-fine) knives can be corrected to prevent severe blunting. With coarse grained we can sharpen a blunt ax, a shoulder blade and even bite into sharpen a rather thoroughly blunt knife. But if you take only one with you, I recommend coarse / fine (coarse / fine).
And if you certainly want to rely on gadgets more than on your skill, you can complement your Diafold with the Magna-Guide. Gadget will increase the weight of your equipment only by 70 g, of course, not counting the Diafold device itself. Its clamp is no different from the Aligner fixture described in the previous chapter. The difference lies only in the design of the rail, equipped with a compact but very strong magnet and quite securely stick to any Diafold device. I strongly suspect that any of the bells and whistles on the trip will get spoiled or lost anyway, but at least Diafold can be used perfectly without them. I will just have the chance to make sure of this.
Lansky Sharpeners offers very similar devices called Double-Sided Folding Diamond Sharpening Paddles. Abrasives are noticeably smaller in size, 90 mm long and 23 mm wide, have continuous working surfaces. The manufacturer offers two options for the combination of grain, coarse / fine (coarse / fine) indicated in red and blue and medium / fine indicated in green and blue. Unfortunately, the company does not list the degree of granularity of its abrasives in the catalogs. The device is comfortable to use and easy to carry, its weight is 65 g.
