The float is an important part of fishing gear, because it is with its help that the angler learns about the bite. But despite the apparent simplicity of the design and its mounting, mounting the float requires special knowledge and skills. If they are not followed, the float will not perform its functions. Because for every fisherman it is important to know where and how to properly secure the float on the fishing line.

The design and function of the float
To understand how to properly secure the float on a fishing line, first of all you need to disassemble its structure. Most floats consist of the following parts:
- Body. Located in the middle and is usually the widest part of the product;
- Antenna. Placed on top of the body. It is a thin elongated rod;
- Keel. Located below the body. Outwardly, it looks like a small tube.
Floats of this type are often painted in two contrasting shades. However, not all floats have such components in their design. For example, goose feather items are a solid rod, which, for convenience, is painted by fishermen in different colors. There are also special bubbles for surface fishing on carp. Their design consists solely of the whole body.
Recently, most of the sold floats are equipped with a ring on the tip of the keel. This design greatly simplifies the installation of products on the fishing line. And for floats that do not have rings, there are special adapters that are easily and firmly worn on the keel.
It is wrong to assume that the only function of the float is to bite alarm. The main functions of the product also include:
- Holding the sinker as well as the baited hook at a certain depth;
- Ensuring the game of bait in the pond;
- Elimination of water splashes when casting.
Also, the float takes an active part in casting bait, providing the necessary range and accuracy of flight.
Necessary elements for fastening
To implement the proper fastening of the float on the fishing line, you may need the following materials and tools:
- Rubber, silicone or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) heat shrinkable tubing, or cambric, which can be used as stoppers;
- Single thread;
- Triple and single swivels, equipped with clockwork rings;
- Fine wire, best made of copper;
- Small lead shot;
- Knife, pliers or scissors;
- Pliers or tweezers.
It is important to bear in mind that the list of materials and tools required for securing the float depends primarily on the method of installation chosen by the fisherman.
Features of the choice of a point of fixture of a float on a scaffold
The point at which the float will be installed on the bait, by any of the methods, is always chosen by experience. It is important to approximately know the depth of the reservoir at the proposed point of fishing. It is also necessary to take into account the behavior and depth of the fish in a particular fishing season.
The installation point of the float must be such that the sinker can lower the hook with bait to the depth necessary for biting.
At the same time it is important that the cargo used is imperceptible, otherwise the fish will be afraid to approach the bait. The weight of the sinker should easily lower the float and the bait into the water, but not be too heavy.
Otherwise, the alarm device will be immersed in water above the permissible level, and most of the bites will go unnoticed. When the weight of the weight is insufficient, the float will also show insufficient sensitivity for efficient fishing.
Types and methods of fastening
There are two ways of attaching a float to a fishing line:
A deaf method of installation involves the installation of a detector at a single point, which can only be changed by applying physical force to it. With the correct attachment of the float to the fishing line, it cannot move independently. The sliding method of mounting the float implies the possibility of free movement of the detector in the water along the fishing line.
When using this type of installation, the indicator plays the role of fixing the depth at which the bait will be located. Mounting the float at one point on the fishing line can be performed by several methods. However, the simplest mounting option is to use nipples, or silicone cams. It is conducted in this way:
- The nipple diameter suitable to the antenna and the keel is cut into pieces of 7-10 mm in length.
- The resulting pieces are strung on a fishing line.
- The antenna and the keel of the float are pushed into the cambric pieces, due to which the signaling device is attached to the fishing line at one selected point.
In the process of stringing nipple pieces, special attention should be paid to the design of the float. If it is equipped with an eyelet for fixation in the body, then it is important to string the cambric segments in the order of fastening points. The first step is to pass through the segment under the antenna. After that, you can thread through the eye of the line. And only after all these actions, the mounting of the fastening element intended for fixing the keel is performed.
If the indicator has a built-in eyelet for fixation, the float is fastened with a nipple only on the keel of the product. In the case when the design of the detector does not involve the use of the ear, the float is fastened using one piece of a cambric worn on the antenna and two segments fixing the keel. In this case, the lower part of the nipple, worn on the keel, should bulge a few millimeters beyond the edges of the keel perch. Meeting this simple requirement will protect the line from tangling in the float area when casting.
For floats with a locking eyelet located on the keel, it is necessary to thread the line into the ring and fix the alarm device at the selected point by running around the node. This method will allow you to easily move the float when you need to adjust the depth of fishing. And in the case when the depth of activity of the fish in the pond is known in advance, it is recommended to use the deaf method of fixing the float using a triple swivel with a fastener.
In order to properly secure the float on the fishing line using a sliding method of fixation, it is important to correctly select the signaling devices, because not every float is designed for such fasteners. Floats that have a through hole along their entire body are suitable for sliding attachment, or are equipped with a ring on the keel.
The installation process has the following sequence of actions:
- On the line at the appropriate point is set the upper limiter of the float.
- Through the hole in the detector, the product is put on the fishing line.
- At a suitable point, under the keel of the float, the lower stop is mounted.
Due to the possibility of the detector to move arbitrarily along the fishing line, the following requirements are put forward to the stoppers used in the installation process:
- These elements should have a dense but soft texture;
- The dimensions of the stoppers should allow the line to pass freely through the rings of the gear when casting.
The bottom stop should be installed as close as possible to the main weight of the gear. And so that the locking elements do not slide off, special locking assemblies are imposed above the upper and below the lower stopper.
The process of adjusting the float is extremely important when preparing gear. An improperly installed alarm device will not only not perform its functions, but will also provide an inappropriate arrangement of bait, which will cause the bite to fail. In this case, the technique of adjusting the float depends on the method of its fixation.
If the type of float mounting is chosen deaf, then the poklevka signaling device simply moves along the line manually upwards or downwards to the required level of depth. In which direction it is necessary to move the float, the fisherman determines on the spot of catching by experience. To do this, the equipment is thrown into the water, after which the position of the float is evaluated. If the product is lying on the water, then the sinker is located at the bottom of the reservoir and the selected height of the float is too large. In this case, the alarm should be moved down, closer to the bait.
When sliding the float on the fishing line, in the process of changing the depth, the product moves independently in the range allowed by the stoppers. However, if it is necessary to change this range of movement, the fisherman needs only to move the upper stopper along the fishing line.
