Recently, in the article about the Kornet ATGM, we promised from time to time to post small reviews of weapons and equipment that are mentioned on the pages of our favorite books. This, as well as last time, will deal with the weapon mentioned in the Andrei Cruz trilogy. It was from the VSSK “Exhaust” rifle that the spouse of the protagonist of the book hit the enemy’s living strength and much less living equipment. The same enemy.
So, VSSK Vykhlop (large-caliber sniper rifle) was developed at TsKIB SOO (Central Design Bureau of Sports and Hunting Weapons, Tula, branch of Instrument Design Bureau) in 2002, by special order of the Center for Special Purpose (CSN) of the FSB of Russia. The rifle (more precisely, the sniper VKS / VSSK Vykhlop complex consisting of weapons and cartridges for it, the GRAU 6S8 index) was first openly demonstrated in the fall of 2005 at the Interpolitech exhibition in Moscow. As far as we know, the Vykhlop complex was released in a small amount and is in service with the units of the special-purpose center of the FSB of Russia.
The main purpose of the VKS / VSSK “Exhaust” sniper rifle is a low-noise and flameless defeat of protected targets (cars, other unarmored vehicles, living force in heavy body armor or hiding in vehicles, etc.) at ranges of up to 600 meters. At the same time, due to the use of a bullet with a subsonic initial speed (about 290-295 m / s) in combination with an effective silencer, a significant reduction in the sound level of the shot is achieved (the volume of the shot is 123 dB).
The high effectiveness of action on the target is achieved by using heavy large-caliber bullets weighing 59 grams (cartridge SP-130PT with increased accuracy) and even 76 grams (cartridge SP-130VPS with increased penetration). For the STS-130PT cartridge, the accuracy of shooting is 25mm at a distance of 100 meters (1 MOA / angular minute), for the SC-130VPS chuck – guaranteed penetration of a 16mm steel plate at a range of 200 meters or a heavy body armor of protection class 5 (GOST) at a distance of 100 meters . The cartridges use specially made bullets and relatively short cylindrical sleeves – the total length of 12.7 mm of the SC-130 cartridge is 97 mm against 145 mm for the “ordinary” domestic large-caliber cartridge 12.7х108. Due to the relatively small (for the selected caliber, of course) muzzle energy, the weapon for it turned out to be almost two and a half – three times lighter than rifles for “ordinary” large-caliber cartridges 12.7×108 or 12.7×99.
However, the muzzle energy of the bullet of the SC-130PT cartridge is about 2500 Joules (3,650 J for the cartridge of the SC-130VPS), and due to the heavy bullet with a high ballistic coefficient, the energy is better preserved along the bullet’s trajectory compared to “ordinary” sniper cartridges 7.62mm or “silent” 9mm cartridges when firing from a BCC “Vintorez” rifle.
It should be noted that such a development (large-caliber low-noise rifle for a special “weakened” cartridge) is not unique. Back in the mid-1990s, JD Jones, a well-known specialist in special cartridges working for SSK Industries, created .500 Whisper cartridges using a shortened case of a hunting rifle cartridge .460 Weatherby Magnum combined with a precision caliber bullet 12.7mm, which had excellent ballistics. The muzzle speed and bullet mass of .500 Whisper cartridges are comparable to those for 12.7mm SC-130 cartridges, and they are used in specially upgraded magazine or even single-shot rifles (created on the basis of hunting), equipped with a silencer and optical sights. In addition to the Whisper series of ammunition in the United States, other ammunition and weapons of similar purpose and caliber are also limitedly produced, but there is no reliable information as to whether such weapons are used by special services or law enforcement units in the United States and other countries.
The sniper special large-caliber rifle VKS / VSSK “Exhaust” was built in the bullpup layout and has an integral silencer, removable for transporting or cleaning weapons. Manual reloading mechanism, with a longitudinal sliding bolt, controlled by a handle on the right side of the weapon. The barrel is locked by a swiveling bolt action lich. Single row detachable box magazine holds 5 rounds. On the receiver of the rifle at the top there are fastenings for optical or night sights, in addition, the rifle is equipped with backup open sights (front sight and rear sight), made on folding bases. In front of the short plastic forearm is a folding bipod. Next – a little video. Alas, the quality and content of the videos leaves much to be desired. But, unfortunately, it’s not yet possible to make a report about this rifle.
