If you like to travel and wander for a long time in the forest, then you just need a compass, since without it it is very easy to get lost. Of course, you can buy a compass in a store, but you can try to make a homemade compass yourself. First of all, for a homemade compass, you need a round box, preferably with a lid. Use a metal box, such as a boot cream.
Making a homemade compass, magnetizing the hands, assembling and testing, the simplest homemade compass from a sewing needle.
Annealed the iron box selected for a homemade compass, glow red in the oven or on the stove and allow to cool slowly. Then remove the scale from it and paint it with nitro paint. Using the compass, draw a bottom on the cardboard inside diameter of the box. Cut it out and make a hole with a diameter of 2 mm with smooth edges, into which fasten an ordinary linen button so that the blind hole of the button’s nipple is at the top.
Make a compass rose out of thick paper. Color it and cut it out. Glue the card to the prepared bottom and install it in the box. Make a side of cardboard too, and grease it with glue, firmly install it in a jar, pressing the card to the bottom of the jar.
Homemade compass potato.
The side should be 5-6 mm below the top edge of the can or corolla. Then cut a circle from the thin plexiglass according to the diameter of the can – glazing of the compass. Make a hole in the center of the circle and fasten the second linen button to it so that the blind hole of the button is at the bottom. Instead of plexiglass, you can take any transparent film or use film, previously washing the emulsion from it.
Having installed the glazing on the side, fix it on top with a spring ring, which is made of steel wire. The linen buttons installed on the bottom and the glazing serve as thrust bearings, in which the axis with the arrow of a makeshift compass will turn.
The assembly of parts of a homemade compass is shown in the figure below. In accordance with the height of your box, determine the height of the axis of the arrow. Make the axis of the wire, which could freely rotate in the thrust bearings (buttons). Thoroughly file the ends of the axis with a file and sanded with a knife sharpener..
Assembling parts of a homemade compass.
Transfer the arrow to the tin, cut it out, put it on the board, set the awl in the center of the arrow and, slightly striking the awl with a hammer, punch a hole under the axis so that the axis fits snugly into the hole of the arrow. Take the axis with the arrow in your hand and check if the arrow is balanced. If any end of the arrow outweighs, then file it.
Magnetizing the needle of a homemade compass.
After the needle of your homemade compass is balanced, it must be removed and magnetized. First, at one end of the arrow, scribble the letter N with the tip, then take the magnet and its south pole (it is sometimes painted red), draw several times from the middle of the arrow to its end with a mark. Then the north pole (it is sometimes colored blue) do the same with the other end. Repeat several times.
For magnetization, you can use magnets from the speakers of old receivers, tape recorders or televisions. They have the shape of a ring, which must first be carefully broken with a hammer and a chisel into several parts.
Final assembly and testing of a homemade compass.
After magnetizing, install the arrow on the axis. Holding the axis vertically, you will see that it has taken a certain position. No matter how you change the position of the arrow, it will take the same direction. The end of the arrow marked with the letter N will always be directed north and the other south.
Now install the axis in the button bearings – and the homemade compass is ready. After the final assembly of your homemade compass, perform its final check by comparing its readings with a pre-tested and serviceable factory-made compass.
The simplest homemade compass from a sewing needle.
The simplest homemade compass can be made in this way. It is necessary to leave a sewing needle for several days next to the magnet. After wetting the magnetized needle with grease or oil, gently lower it to the surface of the poured water.
The fat will not allow the needle to sink, and it will turn from north to south. You can take a magnetized needle with you on any trip and, if necessary, use it not as a sewing accessory, but as an arrow of a makeshift compass.
