Apart from natural materials, the manufacture of a tinder for extraction of two types is available on its own: the tinder itself, obtained from the fungus of the tinder fungus and cellulose-fibrous materials, such as cotton wool, hemp, fabric from these materials, and the like, burnt to gray or light brown color.

The fungus tinder fungus conventionally consists of three parts: the suede part of the pulp, the tubular part in which the pores are stored, and the hard crust. We are interested in the suede part of the mushroom. To extract it, the mushroom is cut into thin slices with a sharp knife, the tubular part is thrown out and the suede is left. Then the suede wedges are peeled and the remains of the tubular part of the fungus, and then boiled over low heat in a solution of nitrate or ash from iskostra, about 1-3 hours.

After cooking, the mushroom slices are placed on a solid base, beat off with a wooden hammer and crumple, rubbing like during washing. After processing, the pieces of tinder fungus noticeably increase in volume and become significantly softer.

From cellulosic materials such as cotton wool, hemp and a fabric of these materials, a tinder for producing fire is obtained by burning without access to air. For this, the source material is placed in a closed container, for example, an iron can with a lid, and carefully heated uniformly in volume. After a while, when a faint smoke develops, heating is stopped, but the temperature is maintained. The tinder ready time is usually determined empirically. Then the tank is cooled and the tinder is removed.

The tinder, obtained in any way, can be impregnated with a strong solution of nitrate or even powder pulp, but then its burning rate will greatly increase and it will be very inconvenient to use, therefore, such operations are done only in those rare cases when it is really necessary.

A correctly made tinder has a huge flammable ability, it begins to smolder from the slightest spark and is very easily ignited by contact with hot objects or a beam of sunlight received using a lens. The tinder can be used to produce fire by a variety of methods, and in some cases it can even play the role of a smoldering moderator.
