Before the trip, all products must be sorted out, put in bags or special containers. Most products need waterproof packaging. They need to be laid out in bags of 1-2 kg. First of all, it’s easier to put them in their hands, kayaks and take into account consumption. And secondly, with small packaging of products, every tourist or crew of a raft or kayak can have a supply of products. Therefore, in case of loss of some products, losing a backpack, accident with a kayak or raft, the group still has a certain stock of various products.

In order not to waste time searching for the right products, inscriptions should be made on the bags. The bags are sewn from fabric. Inside they lay a bag of polyethylene a little larger so that it does not experience a breaking load. External, fabric bag protects the inner, plastic, from accidental damage. Instead of polyethylene, you can use perfol (PK-4 film), durable, lightweight, transparent plastic, thin rubber or oilcloth. But bags of these materials must first be washed well with soap in order to get rid of their unpleasant odor.

In mountain, skiing, hiking trips, it is usually enough to have one large, but durable waterproof liner in the backpack. Then the products can be put in a backpack just in cloth bags. For kayaking trips, it is best to pack the products in specially stitched, durable, waterproof bags with a diameter of up to 250 mm and a length of up to 800 mm. Such bags are easy to place in the bow and stern of the kayak or to be placed along the sides..

Preparation and use of bakery products in the campaign.

Bread should be taken for the first 3-5 days. A large supply of fresh bread is difficult to carry and poorly preserved (especially in conditions of high humidity). Only in winter, frozen bread is stored for a long time and when thawed, restores its properties. However, in long winter trips, the mass of the backpack is crucial, which is why bread in such trips is replaced by breadcrumbs. In other cases, a supply of flour is taken, from which the tourists themselves bake or cake.

Biscuits purchased at the store must be dried additionally before the trip. Crackers, prepared independently, must be packaged in compact packets for single use. Flour does not require mandatory waterproof packaging. If it gets into the water, the bag is covered with a thin layer of dough from the inside, the rest of the flour remains dry.

Before going from flour, you can make a primitive seasoning for soups. Fry flour for 5 minutes in oil with finely chopped onions until yellow. This concentrate is very popular among Siberian hunters due to the fact that it is stored for a long time..

Preparation and use of meat and fish products in the campaign.

Canned food should be taken in cans. Glass jars are heavy and less durable. Tin cans are recommended to be preliminarily examined to see if they are swollen. The so-called bombing, which may be associated with the accumulation of gases as a result of the activity of harmful microorganisms. Such canned foods, especially meat and fish, are hazardous to health..

You can’t buy unsterilized canned fish (preserves) for the trip, on which there is an inscription: “The product is not subject to long-term storage.” Half-smoked sausage at normal air temperature lasts quite a long time. However, so that the surface of the sausage is not moldy, you must lubricate it with grease.

In no case should you take unstable cooked sausages on a camping trip. Smoked salted fish in order to protect it from “rusting” should be placed in plastic bags and sealed with a hot iron or soldering iron.

Preparation and use of butter and dairy products.

Butter spoils quickly, so you need to melt it, pack it in metal cans and solder it. Small tin boxes are very convenient for this purpose. Vegetable oil is conveniently transported in a small polyethylene canister with a capacity of 2 liters, designed to store food (non-technical) products.

Powdered milk or cream is transferred from cans (especially cans with iron lids and cardboard walls) to plastic bags, which are placed in cloth bags.

Preparation and use in the campaign cereals and pasta.

Rice and millet must be washed and dried before the trip. Buckwheat – to fry and sift. It is recommended to take horns from pasta on a camping trip, as pasta and vermicelli easily crumble when carried. And cereals and horns are packed in bags.

Preparation and use of sugar, confectionery, tea, coffee, cocoa.

Sugar is preferably taken in the form of sand. It is convenient to carry, does not tear the packaging. Sugar should be stored in a waterproof container. Sugar is preferred on a ski trip because it is taken there on the go. Sweets are packed in metal cans..

Tea, coffee, cocoa is best taken in metal boxes, and the boxes must first be dried, and then pour the contents into them without paper packaging. In this case, it will fit much more. Cardboard boxes with coffee or cocoa are not suitable for a long trip. Metal boxes are sealed at the seam with adhesive tape or sticky transparent tape, having previously removed the paper sticker, otherwise all waterproofing will be useless.

Other products.

Salt, like sugar, requires waterproof packaging. Even in waterproof bags, salt quickly gets wet and its mass increases sharply when the bag is opened in the morning and in the evenings during dew. If 8% starch is added to the salt, it will get slightly wet. It is good to store tomato sauce in plastic jars. When you press the flask, the tomato is squeezed out of it.

Pouring sauce into a jar, you must try to fill it to the very top, otherwise mold will appear. Mustard can be taken in tubes, but you need to put them in a place in the backpack in which they would not crush.

Vitamins are best placed in a metal box. Citric acid should be placed in a plastic waterproof box. You can not put citric acid in metal cans, since the acid reacts. Soda is stored in a waterproof bag. The yeast must be dry and stored in a waterproof container. Ground pepper must be poured into a metal box and sealed with adhesive tape.
