Production of a simple float from improvised means, a float from a goose feather, polystyrene foam and mounting foam.

If you decide to make a float yourself, keep in mind that many factors influence the sensitivity of a float. Its shape, dimensions, the material from which it is made, and even the method of attachment to the fishing line. The simplest float can be made from cork from any bottle, a piece of a dry stalk of sorghum (broom) or a goose feather.

Production of a simple float from improvised means, a float from a goose feather, polystyrene foam and mounting foam.

For large floats, goose feathers are taken, for small ones – feathers of other birds. First of all, you need to remove the spine from the pen shaft. This should be done carefully so as not to damage the upper film – the integrity and water resistance of the rod will be violated. The ostia is cut with scissors, and the remaining villi are polished with a skin. Then the lower, thinner part of the rod must be cut obliquely.

or with the safety razor blade you need to give the foam the desired shape. Then remove the needle, and in its place insert a round rod, previously planed from a section of bamboo and greased with glue BF-2 or “Moment”, of the same thickness.

After that, with a smooth, but rather heavy object, the workpiece must be rolled on a flat board, for example, to a bench. The lower part of the float immersed in water, ideally this is 3/5 of the length of the float, is nice to paint in a color that imitates a natural object accidentally caught in the water – a piece of algae, tree bark or a dead leaf. For this, dark brown, brown-green and the like are suitable..

The colors of the surface part, on the contrary, should in all conditions provide good visibility of the float. Some anglers try to paint the top of the float in a bright red color. This should not be done – the red color tires your eyesight. The best combinations are: bright yellow and black, white and purple. These colors do not frighten the fish and are clearly visible from the shore..

A self-immersing float is made by wrapping with lead tape the bottom of a conventional float so that it stands in water. The tape is fixed with a winding and waterproof glue. You can also insert several pellets into the bottom of the float and lock.

Making a simple float from polyurethane foam.

Such technology will make it possible to make so many floats of any shape and size at a time that they will last not only for several years, but will remain to share with a less skilled friend. For the manufacture of such floats you will need: mounting foam, straight tubes of various lengths and diameters (according to the size of future floats), material for the mast and keel of the float (if necessary), thin wire, thinly rolled and cut into narrow strips of sheet lead or narrow sinkers, waterproof glue and paint.

Manufacturing technology is simple. Foam is injected into tubes pre-lubricated with internal oil or petroleum jelly. Excess foam protruding from the ends is immediately removed. If you use a tube from the assembly foam kit for injection, sticking it to about half of the mold tube and injecting a small portion of the foam, which is easily achieved after several attempts, then there will be no such surplus.

Immediately inserted exactly in the center of the keel and mast (if necessary) or wire twisted so that you can put on a sinker. And it is better to wind the right amount of sheet lead. The ends of the wire protruding overloaded are slightly bent for reliable fixation in the body of the float. After 5-10 minutes, the mounting foam freezes, and the perfectly round and smooth float is ready.

It remains only to carefully remove it from the tube, cover with waterproof glue and paint. A bottle of mounting foam will last for several hundred, or even thousands, depending on the size of the floats.
