The issue of fixing the knife in the sheath is no less important than the balance of the knife, the shape, size and quality of the steel of its blade and a convenient handle. Really good sheaths for a hunting knife should be reliable so that you don’t simply lose the knife during hunting. Should be convenient for removing the knife with one hand. They should not be too narrow so that if needles, snow, other contaminants get into them or the scabbers freeze, the knife can be pulled out freely and put back.
Production of wooden and canvas scabbard for a knife, removable attachment to a wooden scabbard, placement of a scabbard on trousers.
Siberian craftsmen used to make wooden or birch bark sheaths, in which the knife was fastened tightly with a handle and the blade hung freely in a spacious cavity. With such a system, the knife handle and scabbard should be adjusted relative to each other. The width of the handle in the abdomen should be 3-5 mm greater than the widest part of the blade.
Such scabbards are quite capable of being made independently. Wooden scabbard can be made from any dense straight layer wood (walnut, pear, birch). A suitable sized block is split, leveling the adjacent edges with a planer. Then, grooves are cut in both halves along the width of the “abdominal” part of the handle so that it is half buried in one and the other groove, sitting tightly with its middle part.
The depth of the gutter from the end of the handle of the embedded knife to the end of the blade gradually decreases to 4 mm. Next, each half planed with a knife and a rasp outside. The wall thickness should be 4-5 mm. The width of the contacting faces is 6 mm, and at the lower end of the sheath it is up to 10-15 mm. On the edge of the mouth of the sheath, a small roller with a radius of 3 mm is left outside, into which the upper leather sheath mount ring will abut.
If the mouth does not come out very carefully, it is expanded so that between the walls and the middle part of the handle there is a gap of 1-1.5 mm around the entire circumference. Next, the knife handle is wrapped in one layer with thin cellophane, its middle part is 2-3 layers with a cloth tape 3 cm wide, saturated with epoxy glue, and clamped between the halves of the scabbard, pre-lubricating their contacting faces with the same glue.
Under the roller outside, the sheath is pulled together with 6–7 turns of kapron twine on the glue, and the end is stitched with 4–5 steps of the same twine. After that, the sheath with the knife is wrapped tightly with a rope and left until the glue has completely hardened.
Then the knife is removed and filed out the protruding edge of the resulting fabric-epoxy ring. This ring gives perfect grinding with a handle, enhances the sheath’s split strength and protects the upper edge from damage by the blade tip. Now you can decorate the scabbard and soak them with wood boiling drying oil.
Production of attachment to a wooden scabbard.
Mounting to the scabbard makes sense to make removable. It consists of two leather or camouflage rings tightly mounted on the scabbard with a width of 3 and 1.5 mm, connected by a strap. With frequent use of the knife in the winter, wearing it on a nordine or bandoleer is very inconvenient. To carry the knife on the thigh, you should sew leather or a three-fold canvas cover of size 7 to the trousers at the back of the lower corner of the slit of the right side pocket&# 215; 5 cm.
Its upper and lower edges remain unstitched. A lower (narrower) fastening ring is pushed into this gap, and the strap is pressed over the pants. Now through the upper and lower rings the sheath is tightly driven. At the same time, they are fixed quickly, reliably and in an extremely comfortable position for wearing and use..
To insert a knife, it is enough to get the end of the blade into the spacious mouth of the scabbard, and then he himself will fall into place, even from a throw. This operation is freely performed with one hand without looking. To remove the knife, it is enough to grab the protruding part of the handle with four fingers and a palm and with an effort rest your thumb against the roller of the scabbard. The scabbard is removed from the hip (an overnight campfire or in any other case) also easily and quickly.
Making canvas knife scabbard.
The sheath of the described sample can be made from any fabric. To do this, a wooden template is planed according to the parameters of the sheath cavity and wrapped in one layer with thin cellophane, wrapped in 3-4 layers with canvas impregnated with epoxy resin, forming a flange of the bell edge. After hardening the glue, the sheath is removed from the template and turned with a flat file. Next, leather fastening is sewn. If desired, these light and durable sheaths can be skinned.
