Flying birds are much easier to catch than other animals. The principle of operation of the pole-trap for birds is that the bird, by its weight and residual speed at the time of landing, knocks down a loosely fixed pole (gatehouse) and enters the noose-loop with its paws. At the same time, the load (stone) tied to the free end of the rope is released from the hook and falls down under the action of its gravity, the loop is quickly tightened on the bird’s foot.

This trap can be used without bait. But if the bait is available, then it is better to scatter it nearby on the ground so that it is clearly visible to a passing bird. This will provoke her landing. To set up a trap, it is necessary to drive a support peg (rack) 0.5-1 meters long into the ground. Split its upper end and insert a thin cross-beam into it. The length is slightly larger than the diameter of the peg and the thickness is slightly larger than the diameter of the rope (fishing line). This cross-member should ensure unhindered passage through the end section of the support peg of the free end of the loop of the loop, not allow it to crash lower into the resulting gap and get stuck there when the load falls.

Further, on one side, sharpen one end of a thin branch (perch) so that it enters the end section of the support peg tightly and is held there in a horizontal position. Then, make a loop and attach a stone (load) to its free end so that when it falls to the ground, the loop is completely tightened. Lay the rope with the load on the cross-section in the section of the support peg and pinch it with a horizontal pole, spread the noose-loop on it.

By the principle of a failing support, traps on flying birds can be simulated with several loops at the same time, the likelihood of catching a bird will increase. As a bait, you can use bunches of mountain ash, earthworms, slugs, caterpillars, white larvae of ants, snails, etc..

A place for planting a bird can be made of a thin, flexible, erect stem or a side branch of a young tree or bush. Why next to it, drive a peg into the ground with a notch on top. The principle of operation of such a trap is a bird, which has settled on an unstable upper, overlapping, in the form of pointed and connected in two rows, pegs on two axes, falls under its weight into a cage of poles driven into the ground and fixed from above. To automatically close the upper ceiling, a load can be attached to each row of pegs (stone, piece of thick branch, bag with soil, metal). The gate mechanisms on top of such trap cells can be in the form of unstable circles or crosses. Tied to the middle of a short horizontal perch, continuous ceilings of thin branches with grass, and so on.

Depth is about 1 meter. The width of the pit trap depends on the size of the bird. She should not be able to open her wings inside the pit and fly. A pit must be dug in the place where a cluster of birds on the ground was noticed. On vacation or at feeding. Or in a pre-fed area. The entrance to the pit may be at the general level of the site.
