The survival insect bag is one of the most discussed and discussed topics related to personal training for difficult emergency situations. The bag aims to provide a minimum of comfort and possibilities to those who need it at the same time. There are literally many ways to prepare your bag of errors, but all bags must contain some essential components.
It should be noted that a survival kit can be of many types, according to the user’s point of view. Kits can be highly specialized (for certain areas / climates – see military survival kits for the US Army) or general-purpose kits designed to cover as many potential situations as a man may encounter at times .
Regardless of your destination, most kits contain a number of essential elements for the survival of anyone in a difficult situation. We will refer here to the elements necessary for survival in nature, we will not necessarily discuss specific situations and survival capabilities in extreme conditions with the minimum of equipment. We will talk about the bags that will make life easier for someone who has to survive in nature or in a disaster like a flood or an earthquake. It usually provides all the elements that can help you survive for at least 72 hours.
Building the insect bag
Choose your bag – The first thing to keep in mind is to choose the real bag. Now, there are two ways to do this.
- First, choose the bag and then see how you can fill it.
- Second, gather all the items and then choose the bag to have enough space for all the materials.
Fill the bag This is the main part of the whole process. First, let us think about all the things you need when you go on a trip or in an emergency situation: clothes, water and food, shelter and bedding, a source of heat, lighting, tools, hygiene items, first kit of help, something you can communicate with (if you can), help with traveling and other things that you think might be useful.
Clothing – keep in mind that it should always be dry and hot, so you will need at least two changes of clothes. Wet clothes and light bandages in cold climates can cause hypothermia, which can be fatal.
You should prepare this part of your bag considering your comfort level at different temperatures. It is also advisable to update your bag when the season changes.
At first glance, pack the following items:
- Convertible pants
- Shirts with short or long sleeves.
- Wool socks (it is very important that your feet are warm all the time)
- Rain suit / poncho
Food – Food is not that important because the body can endure a considerable amount of time without it (and that means days). Most survival experts indicate a period of approximately 3 weeks. A person with a normal and normal diet will experience a weakening of the body and a decrease in physical abilities after 7-8 days of starvation. In a situation of survival it can mean a worsening of a situation that is already potentially dangerous.
Lack of food, particularly in the conditions required for a survival situation, can have additional exacerbated effects (in the midst of fatigue, stress, etc.), so it is usually recommended to pay more attention to the maintenance of the body in terms.
Nutrients can be provided by sweet snacks, sweets and protein / energy bars, salt, sugar, spices or by cans and other dehydrated foods.
You may want to have something for food preparation. Then, you will need:
- Protein / energy bars (at least 6)
- Dehydrated meals (at least 3)
- Cooking pot
- Portable stove and fuel.
- Metal cup
- Can opener
Use only metal utensils for cooking, since they resist high temperatures.
Water – It is particularly important because its absence can reduce it in a much shorter period (approximately 3 days, depending on the conditions). Make sure you have a minimum of 1 liter of water / day.
In case you run out of water, try to find another source. The quality of the water must be ensured by the purification. This is achieved by boiling at least 5 minutes. You can also use water purification tablets, obviously respecting the dose written on your packaging, or water filters.
You can improvise a container to carry the water by placing a plastic bag inside a sock. The items you need:
- Minimum 3 liters of water.
- Water bottle (maybe a metal one)
- Water purifying tablets
- Water filters
Shelter and bedding – Exposure to the elements of nature: rain / wind / snow / excessive heat can kill it, so this requires adequate protection. You should include some items, but be careful to choose the lightest and most compact ones so you do not have a heavy bag:
- Sleeping bag
- Sleeping pad
However, the items that can be included in a survival kit are limited. You need to have basic knowledge about building a shelter from natural materials, as this can help you survive.
A very tight survival blanket, folded and placed in the bag can be a very valuable item. Of course, you can use thick plastic or polyethylene bags. They can be placed on the frame of the shelter and effectively help against wind, rain or snow retaining heat.
You can use the survival blanket when you need additional heat. It is advisable to wrap the sleeping bag with it and not use it directly on your body. This is due to the sweat that will keep it cold after unwrapping it.
As a general indication of the location of the shelter, you should look for a good place, away from the dangers and easily adaptable. You have to exploit the potential of the terrain (you can use a large rock, a broken or torn tree, a natural crack, etc.). The refuge should be constructed in a protected area of high winds (when possible) and at a greater distance from a water source due to the animals that may come to drink.
There are two important aspects to consider, although practice has shown that they are often overlooked: the isolation of the soil and the size of the refuge. Soil insulation is very important and it is good to do it with as many materials as possible (natural materials, extra clothes, sheets, newspapers, tree bark) to create a barrier between the body and the cold floor. The size of the shelter is important because in this way you will see how quickly it will warm up and maintain body heat or other sources.
Heat source – heat is essential in temperate or cold climates and the kit must contain at least 2 methods to make fire to be safe. If one of them explodes, it will have some support.
You can use a lighter (some of them are very resistant, they can produce sparks even after they run out of gas), a match and waterproof matches (preferably with wax) packed in a sealed bag. To waterproof the matches, you can cover the knobs with nail polish, but this method is not at all friendly because they will be damaged quickly. When using waterproof waxes, remove the wax with your fingernail or a knife so they can light up.
The primer (the material that transfers the spark to light the fire) is very important and it is good to have it in sufficient quantities. A good base may consist of cotton balls soaked in Vaseline and stored in a sealed container. The packaging can be a plastic bag, a film camera box or even a marker tube; You must use your imagination.
Among many other materials, a good primer to keep in your survival bag consists of hygienic pads soaked in molten wax. You can also use: natural fiber cord that passes through the wax, strips of wax paper, small paper cones filled with confetti covered with wax, vegetable fiber, lint, remnants of textiles, etc.
The modified phosphors are a combination of spark and primer that leads to the prolongation of its combustion time. They can be created by wrapping a small piece of wool or cotton yarn right next to the knob and submerging it in wax. The combustion time will increase in direct proportion to the amount of cotton and wax used.
To summarize, you will need:
- Ignition source
Illumination – It would be good to have more sources of lighting. Like fire sources, if one breaks, you can use the others. Lighting can help you find your way or facilitate your work by doing something.
You can include the following items in your bag:
- Light bar
- Mini LED keychain
- Batteries (the more the better)
- The candles
Tools – It is essential to have a cutting tool in the bag. This can be a small fixed blade knife (which is preferred in all cases when possible), a small, solid pocket knife with a folding blade or multi-tool. The necessary characteristics of the tools must be solid, reliable and comfortable.
A small neck knife of good quality could be enough, along with several other razor blades that are kept in a paper pack, which are used for delicate things (animal skinning, smaller incisions, etc.).
Then, that should be enough:
- Multiple tool
Hygiene items – You can say that they are not that important, but remember that they can prevent infections that can lead to bad form and bad health for you.
Be sure to pack:
- Small towel
- Wet napkins
- Toilet paper
First aid kit – The items in the first aid kit should be placed separately, like a medical kit. They should cover three stages of wound treatment: cleaning / sterilizing the wound (infections can occur in up to 8 hours for an unprotected wound), bandages (made with sterile bandages that protect the wound), and subsequent treatment (and, therefore, both, more bandages to be changed and possibly additional substances)
All of the following elements may be useful at some time:
- Antibiotic gel
- Waterproof plasters (different sizes)
Good tweezers and a magnifying glass.
- A sterile syringe (10 ml).
- Short scissors
- Safety pins
- Anti-inflammatory drugs
- Drugs against diarrhea
Communications – you may not have the opportunity to use them, but if you do, it would be better to have them in your bag:
- Fully charged cell phone
- Emergency radio
- Boot loader
Travel aids – You may be in a situation that requires some of these elements:
- Money (minimum $ 500 – small bills)
- Notepad and pencils
Signaling – a strong whistle would be the easiest option. Also, depending on the situation, you can use a signage mirror (keep it wrapped in paper to prevent scratching), a piece of burned rubber or a flashlight.
These are the most important elements that should be included in the kit. They should be able to help you for a period of between 24 and 72 hours.
Obviously, this kit can be adapted and modified according to the requirements, situations and especially the area where the trip will be made. It is preferable that the elements of the kit have several valences (they can meet multiple requirements).
Self defense – Going out is a dangerous situation and you should be prepared to face it. This is why having some things for self-defense is a necessity. You can choose between:
- Dismantling rifle
- Pepper spray
Miscellaneous – In this category you will find items that do not fit anywhere else. Inclúyelos in your bag so that you do not regret later.
The parachute cable can be used in so many ways that it would be impossible to list them all in this article. You can use it to fish (make a rod), to create an animal trap, to build a shelter, create a tourniquet, secure your backpack, etc.
The adhesive tape is useful for repairing equipment and creating several joints. It can be wrapped in the short end of a pencil.
The wire (brass or copper) is very good, has resistance and is the best material to build traps.
A punch and several needles of various sizes, attached to a small sewing kit can be very valuable to repair the equipment. Some security pins and some buttons can complement this segment very well. All this can be fixed on a piece of material (possibly waxed). It is not a bad idea to keep a needle and a piece of string by your side, ready to use.
To summarize, here are the things in this category that should be found in your bag of errors:
- Paracord (survival belt)
- Scotch tape
- Sewing kit
- Cotton handkerchief
- Garbage bags
- Resealable bags
- Face paint
During a trip, some of the items described here can be carried separately from the kit in convenient areas. For example, you can place objects whose use requires immediate access (a little light, whistle, LED flashlight) on a piece of lace on the neck that can be worn every day. You can fix some bandages or patches on the strap of your backpack. You must be creative in carrying all this.
This is a possible version of a bug out bag. You can adapt it to your own needs, to the country where you live or to the place you want to travel. There are certain areas where it is very hot (therefore, you must bring more water, for example) or very cold (wear warm clothes). There are areas where you can find a higher risk of earthquakes or floods. Update your backpack accordingly.
Although it would be nice to never have to use the items in this bag, it is better to be prepared. In an emergency situation, such as a natural disaster, the one with the survival kit will have more opportunities to live than the one that does not. Think about the fact that you will not have stores to buy food and water, hotels to rest or doctors to treat your wounds.
You will be alone and may also need to take care of some members of your family. You can not guarantee your safety without the help of these small objects. Prepare the bag and, in case of emergency, simply take it.
Possession of the bag of errors will not automatically guarantee your survival. The most important part of the kit is your mind, along with the skills and knowledge acquired and applied over time.
Adaptability, optimal decision-making, correct assessment of a situation can often help you avoid crossing potentially dangerous situations, a situation that puts your life in danger. This is the moment when you will need to survive. Get ready so you can sleep well at night.
