We would recommend using the 18650 batteries with this model, the lamp operating time without recharging increases. Traditionally for all Fenix models, the Fenix TK21 is equipped with a brightness stabilizer. It maintains a constant (without gradual fading) brightness of the flashlight modes. When the battery is seated, the flashlight simply turns off, and in maximum mode (468 lumens), after a few seconds it switches to a lower (180 lumens) operating mode, which is a kind of indicator of battery discharge.
When using batteries (both CR123 and 18650) there is one useful effect. When you turn off the flashlight yourself as a result of discharging the batteries, you must turn it off mechanically (press the power button) or remove the batteries, then the next time you turn it on (after about 30 minutes), the flashlight will work at minimum mode for about another hour on the same batteries. Flashlight Fenix TK21 has protection against improper installation (polarity reversal) of batteries. Another innovation is the presence of two springs (on the plus and minus contacts) in the battery compartment. This eliminates the attenuation of light when recoil from a shot.

This means that the lamp will maintain a good appearance and will not corrode, even under harsh conditions. The design withstands recoil of large-caliber weapons, falling from high altitude to any surface, and even direct hit of high-power traumatic ammunition. Along with high durability, the Fenix TK21 flashlight has a high (IPX8) level of water resistance. When carrying out diving descents, it showed its reliability at depths of up to 15 meters in sea water.

The head part with electronics is combined with the battery compartment, which increases the reliability of the flashlight, and the modes are controlled by a special button at the base of the head part. The on / off functions remained with the end button. The button protrudes slightly beyond the dimensions of the lid and eliminates the possibility of putting a flashlight in the form of a candle, but allows you to work with it in tactical gloves. The button is protected from accidental activation by special protrusions. There is also a removable ring for tactical (cigar) grip. The transfer of control modes to a separate button at the base of the head part, of course, simplifies management, but limits the number of functional grips of the lamp to one reverse.

Fenix LD20 and Fenix TK12 in previous tests. Now we decided to check the operation of the Fenix TK21 flashlight under extreme temperature conditions. In cold conditions, a person may very well need a tactical flashlight, while the ambient temperature can reach a sufficiently low level. Also, the flashlight may be exposed to water (for example, when the snow falling on it melts). We decided to freeze the Fenix TK21 at a temperature of minus 23 degrees, in a container with water for three hours, while leaving the lamp on at minimum mode.

Almost immediately, they began to check the performance of the lamp at high temperatures and high humidity. The black Fenix TK21 case may become very hot when exposed to direct sunlight. Therefore, the lantern was placed in boiling water for three minutes. During this time, the lantern gains a temperature close to 100 degrees Celsius.

After a little cooling down (it was extremely difficult to keep the boiled flashlight even with a glove), all modes functioned as expected, all rubber parts remained without damage. Surprisingly, even the batteries passed this test and did not leak. As a result of these experiments, we once again became convinced of the high reliability of the Fenix flashlights. However, it is clear that there are a number of technical flaws in individual models.

So, the Fenix TK21 flashlight can be confidently recommended to representatives of hazardous professions as an individual flashlight for use in the most difficult conditions (except for the explosive atmosphere there is no corresponding certification for this). The undoubted advantages of this flashlight are its high reliability, unpretentiousness and high light power, thanks to which it can be effectively used for various purposes.
