Having come to the store of goods for diving, you can see a rich assortment of various models – the beginner will definitely get confused. Therefore, we will start with the design in order to immediately eliminate half of the masks.
To date, all manufactured models can be divided into two categories: with a separate projection for the nose and without it.
The first cover almost the entire face – from the eyebrows to the upper lip. They look very elegant and, it would seem, should provide the best panorama. But they are suitable only for small dives – at a depth of 15 meters and more glass of such volume can simply not withstand. In addition, the full-face mask for spearfishing poses problems if you need to blow your ears with pressure drops – for this you have to pinch your nose.
Therefore, for lovers of diving to a considerable depth, masks with a protrusion are better suited. First of all, they are convenient because they allow you to hold your nose to blow the ears without removing the mask. Moreover, having a smaller glass area, they can withstand considerable loads without harming themselves – you can without fear of diving to a depth of more than 15 meters. In this case, the glass is located closer to the eyes of the diver, which provides an excellent overview – no less than the one that can boast a full face mask for underwater hunting.
Now that you have more or less decided on which type of mask suits you, you can proceed to the selection of specific elements – only a mask that meets all the requirements of a swimmer will provide him with sufficient comfort during hunting.
The main criteria for the selection of masks for hunting
Each mask consists of several elements. And all of them should provide maximum comfort to the owner – any deviation, even insignificant at first glance, may well lead to serious diving problems. Therefore, having studied each of the elements separately.
Of course, the most important element of any mask is glass. You shouldn’t even look at other materials – plexiglas and other plastics, even if they are well advertised, they will never compare with it. If only because they grow turbid with time, become covered with scratches and can no longer serve the owner. Well, cheaper models are rarely able to last even one season.
Glass must be tempered. Due to this, if it for some reason bursts at a depth, then it will crumble into small cubes, and not with sharp fragments that would surely damage the eyes. Usually about the special hardening reads the inscription “TEMPERED” on the glass.
Make sure that the glass was not the slightest defect – irregularities and others. Otherwise, under the water, you will see everything distorted.
So called volume, fenced on the one hand glass, and on the other – your face. It is desirable that he was as small as possible. There are several reasons for this:
- When immersed to a considerable depth, the pressure will increase, and the air under the mask will pull up. Models with a small submask volume is not so noticeable.
- The viewing angle increases – the closer to the eyes the glass is, the less obturator will interfere with enjoying the underwater beauty, and at the same time track the prey.
- The resistance of the water during fast swimming and maneuvering delivers much more trouble to divers with massive masks.
At the same time, models with a large submask volume do not provide any important advantages. Therefore, if the facial features allow, try to choose exactly the mask for which this figure will be minimal. Otherwise, a full-face mask for diving and spearfishing will do.
Behind this strange and hard-to-pronounce word lies the rubber base of the mask. More precisely, once they were only rubber, today silicone analogs are becoming more and more common. Be sure to pay attention to the obturator – otherwise you will not see a good mask for spearfishing.
Fortunately, relatively recently, a mask for underwater hunting with diopters appeared on the market. Yes, special glasses are available that can be mounted on an appropriate mask to correct a visual defect, allowing a person to enjoy all the beauty of the underwater world.
It is easy to choose them – it’s enough to tell the seller in the store what kind of glasses you wear with glasses. But if one eye has, for example, an indicator of 0.8, and the other has 0.4, this is a serious problem. After all, there is only one glass in the mask, and it will not work out for such a serious problem. In this case, it is better to take the glass, focusing on a “sighted” eye. Otherwise, you can put the vision completely.
Problems in use
Alas, it is not enough to know how to choose a mask for underwater hunting – it is equally important to have an idea how to use it correctly. Quite often, people, taking a beautiful model, are unhappy, considering that before them is a cheap fake. We will deal with such cases.
The most common claim is that the mask is flowing, which means that the obturator is not of high quality. Yes, it happens. But not always. Just the facial features of each person is unique. On one, any mask fits perfectly, but for the other one has to re-measure dozens in order to achieve the desired result. To do this, during the fitting, press the mask to your face and try to breathe air. If it did not work out – the mask will be a good purchase. You need to know about this simple rule in order to figure out how to choose a mask for spearfishing.
Another problem with use is glass fogging. This is a completely natural process – moist warm air, exhaled by a swimmer, comes into contact with cold glass and moisture condenses. To avoid this, it is enough to rub the glass from the inside with a special composition that is sold in the store. As a substitute you can use regular saliva or soft grass, leaves of trees.
And of course, you should not swim after drinking alcohol – even a special composition will not save from the fumes, and the mask will sweat.
Rating of popular models
In order to simplify the selection of a suitable option as much as possible, we will make a small rating of masks for spearfishing, giving a brief description for the most popular models.
Glasses can be replaced with both ordinary and diopters, and with different capacities.
Very successful model from the Italian manufacturer. Lightweight, with a small submask volume, perfect for swimming at any depth – both small and very serious. Provides good visibility due to the proximity of the glass to the eyes. If desired, you can install dioptric glasses.
This model provides a good overview due to the large, slightly curved glass. In addition, there is practically no frame on the nose – it is so narrow that it does not impair the review at all. The internal volume is minimal, which makes use even more comfortable.
Another model from the Italian company Omer. Glasses are installed small, which slightly impairs the review, but allows you to dive to a considerable depth. Submash space is minimized, so that problems during operation will not exactly arise.
