What is, in the literal sense of the word, a tourist tent? Of course the bottom. And it should be waterproof – once. If the bottom is such, then all things will remain dry. Durable – two. After all, it is it that is in the most severe operating mode, since the tent sometimes has to be set up on sharp stones, and on sand, on rocks, on ice. Seams should be glued with high quality – three.
The bottom, the vestibule, the number of exits from the tourist tent, accessories, braces and pegs for the tent, properties, features, advantages and disadvantages.
The material from which the bottom of the tourist tent is made, as well as the external awning, must have a high characteristic of the pressure of the water column that it withstands. After all, here you also have to take into account the pressure that the bodies of sleeping in the tent, their things. And again: the higher this characteristic, the greater the likelihood that the tent will not “float”.
And if you are absolutely sure that your tent in any case will not let water through, then many difficulties associated with choosing a place for its installation can be avoided. Even puddles will not be scary.
The number of exits from the tourist tent.
The number of exits from the tourist tent, their shape can be very diverse and depend on the purpose of the tent and on the preferences of its owner. Earlier, for example, the most popular entrance tube. Now, such an entrance has probably remained only in winter models, the use of which takes place in conditions where there is a risk of freezing of the zipper, and it is necessary that the distance between the person entering the tent and the fabric is minimal. Otherwise, snow will fall inside..
Today, most tents are equipped with a zipper entrance with plastic teeth. For winter use, you can’t buy “lightning” with metal teeth – the metal freezes. It’s great if there is a waterproof “lightning” on the tent. Usually it is a chain of teeth, covered with an elastic film. When the “zipper” is fastened, the edges of the film fit snugly against each other, thereby preventing moisture from entering.
The chain of teeth “lightning” is not waterproof. Even if such a fastener does not provide complete tightness, it will protect perfectly from heavy rain. Such a “lightning” can have a water resistance of about 7,000 mm of water. There are also “zippers” in which the tooth chain itself is waterproof.
When choosing clothes, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, in general, any equipment equipped with “zippers”, you should pay attention to the manufacturer of the fastener. You can trust such large manufacturers as YKK, TIZIP, SLIX.
Entrance is usually made double. On the inside of the tourist tent, it is duplicated with a mosquito net. If desired, you can close both layers or use one. Many tents have two exits. This is optimal for tents designed for more than two people. It’s not very convenient to move, for example, from the wall to the exit, bumping into the bodies of sleeping neighbors.
The vestibule is directly related to the entrance and exit from the tourist tent. Usually it serves as a place to store all kinds of things, which, as a rule, are not enough, besides the vestibule can be a kind of “launching pad”, where you are preparing to go “to the street”. And in bad weather, the vestibule can serve as a kitchen where food is cooked with a gas burner, and there is no need to crawl out into the cold and rain, racking your brains over how to quickly prepare breakfast, lunch, etc..
And if there are two exits from the tourist tent, then there are two vestibules, respectively. And in this case, their functions can be distributed. One, for example, serves as a place to store things, the other is for everything else..
Tourist tent skirt.
The design of the tourist tent includes some additional details that contribute to the creation of greater comfort and make living in a tent more convenient. A good camping tent should have a “skirt”. So called strip of fabric around the perimeter of the tent, adjacent to the ground.
This detail becomes especially necessary when using a tourist tent in the mountains, in winter, just at low temperatures and in the wind. In rainy weather, it diverts water from the bottom. The “skirt” helps to avoid unpleasant drafts on the sides and bottom, creates additional insulation, and in winter, for example, it can be used to additionally strengthen the tent, saving it from the wind, filling the “skirt” with snow.
True, the “skirt” (sometimes called the “apron”) has its drawbacks. Its presence leads to poor ventilation, condensate accumulates more than usual. You can do without a “skirt” if the tent reaches the ground and is rigidly attached to the frame.
Camping tent accessories.
Do not forget about such a component of the tent, as accessories. At first glance, it does not seem to play any significant role, but in actual fact, there is no way to do without it. The absence of all kinds of braces, hooks, rings, eyelets will not allow you to install or use the tent. The material from which the hardware is made also matters.
Today very often on tents you can find plastic fittings that would be good for everyone if they were not so fragile. In addition, many types of plastic do not withstand ultraviolet radiation and low temperatures. And such accessories can no longer be restored. So the service life of tents equipped with such accessories will be much shorter than you would like.
In terms of strength, aluminum alloys are well suited. But here there are minuses. In cold weather, metal parts can stick to your hands. Often, it is because of the quality fittings that the cost of a tourist tent rises. But in this case, you can be sure of the most efficient operation of the accessories, regardless of operating conditions and climatic conditions.
Tourist tent pegs and braces.
Another detail integral to the design of the tents is pegs. Their purpose is to fix tent tents on the ground. For effective fastening, you need to hammer the peg into the ground, to a depth of no more than 1/2 of its length. To avoid deforming them, do not try to hammer the pegs into stone or rock. And in loose or sandy soils, the depth of driving pegs should be increased.
It is also worth checking the quantity and quality of guy wires with which the tent is stretched to increase wind resistance. The more of them, the better. And they are unlikely to interfere with anything. In addition, if you think that you do not need braces at all, nothing and nobody prevents you from using them. On some tents, braces are made reflective. Nobody will stumble about them in the dark, and you can sleep peacefully.
Everything else, it would be nice if there are all sorts of useful little things in the tent that will make your life easier:
Side pockets. In order not to look for all sorts of necessary things throughout the tent among the piles of other things.
Mesh under the ceiling, serving as a shelf. Here you can, for example, dry various small things, or you can, say, place a flashlight if there are no special mounts for lamps or pendant burners in the tent.
All of the above basic requirements should ideally apply to tents of various models, both hemispheres and half-shelves and “two-slope”.
