For the M16 assault rifle, a muffler of the sound of a shot with adapters of complex shape was created. A reflector is installed in front of the muzzle section, and then ten profiled partitions, sequentially dissecting the stream and forming a series of expansion chambers. The design of the silencer allows firing supersonic cartridges.

Silencer design for Walter MP-K submachine gun, muffler operation principle.
A combined muzzle silencer has been developed for the Walter MP-K submachine gun, which combines the principles of multiple expansion of powder gases in expansion chambers, their swirling due to holes drilled at an angle into blind expansion chambers, re-reflection and separation using conical partitions.

For the MP submachine gun of various modifications, HecklerKoch developed muzzle silencers of an original design. The device of one of them – for the HecklerKoch MP-5 model is shown in the figure below.
There are four expansion chambers near the barrel of the weapon, in the center of which a cylindrical perforated tube passes. The chambers are filled with a metal mesh heat exchanger. In the second half of the muffler, four cylindrical-conical shells-dividers are installed, facing the cylindrical part to a section of the barrel. The angle of taper of the shells to the exit of the silencer body is gradually reduced.
Modification of the HecklerKoch MP-5SD submachine gun (SD index abbreviation for the words Schalf-Dampfer) is equipped with a silencer, the structural diagram of which is shown in the figure below.
In the silencer housing there is a structure made of sheet material, the elements of which are made by stamping and connected by welding. The design consists of four baffle-cutters, which are in the form of breakwaters at different angles. They are rotated 90 degrees relative to each other. On the edges of the planes-partitions made holes for the passage of the bullet.
Streams of powder gases flowing around the planes of the first and passing the second “breakwater” are diverted along the silencer body. Gases that burst after the bullet through the first “breakwater” fall into the second, located at an angle of 90 degrees to the first. Gases colliding at different angles, mixing and reflecting, lose energy and go to the next pair of breakwaters, where the process repeats, and then out.
A positive property of this design of a shot silencer is the impossibility of resonance in a gaseous medium during swirling flows and an increase in the efficiency of the silencer. Silencer outer diameter 40 mm.

According to a somewhat non-standard scheme, a silencer for the Uzi submachine gun is made. The Uzi silencer is distinguished by an adapter made in its very design. The adapter is a wedge-shaped ring-clamp with a slot, which is tightened with a union nut and reliably fixes the muffler on the barrel. The barrel of the gun tightly fits into the tube installed inside the silencer body, which ensures the alignment of the silencer and the barrel.
Behind the tube along the bullet inside the body, a partition with four capillary channels is formed. Gunpowder gas reflected from the first cone-reflector, passing through the channels, partitions, fall into the cavity of the preliminary expansion chamber formed by the tube and the silencer body, in which their pressure drops. Moving further, in the direction opposite to the flight of the bullet, they enter the capillary channels made in the adapter and expire outward.
