At the suggestion of LLC Kizlyar Ukraine, our instructors conducted practical field testing of the working qualities of a tourist and throwing knife Strela produced by Kizlyar LLC. Knife Arrow according to the manufacturer’s statement belongs to the category Knives cutting and skinning.
Tourist and throwing knife Production arrow Kizlyar, photo report, test, review.
Tourist knife Arrow made in the popular military style. To some extent, it can be attributed to the category of hidden wearing knives. The grip of the handle despite the small thickness is quite acceptable, the winding from the cord plays the role of a kind of shock absorber, the knife fits well in the hand. Wet cord does not change the comfort and reliability of the grip. The thickness of the winding cord is chosen successfully.
With injections and dangerous slippery work, the lanyard formed by the ends of the winding cord is very much in topic. At the same time, the lanyard is very in the way and its integrity is questionable when throwing a knife, more on this will be written below. The proportions of falsehood in relation to the total length of the blade are sustained successfully. I would like the manufacturer to find the opportunity and make a notch on a small emphasis, which is from the side of the false blade. This will help in the correct orientation of the knife in the user’s hand when used in conditions of limited visibility and when working with the knife to the touch.
The main characteristics of the tourist knife Strela, stated / real.
Full length: 250/250 mm
Blade Length: 130/130 mm
Blade Thickness: 5.4 / 5.5 mm
Blade Shape: Dagger / Yes
Blade material: stainless steel 50X14MF or 65X13 or imported analogue / no explanatory labels
Sharpening: concave / yes
Handle: metal shank wrapped in nylon cord / yes
Design: all-metal blade, the handle is formed by winding the cord on the shank / yes
Scabbard: waist scabbard made of genuine leather or ABS plastic / yes
The arrow is a powerful, fast-looking knife with a half sharpening. The sharpening angle of the main blade is 43-47 degrees, the false edge is 45-48 degrees. The winding nylon cord on the handle is 5 mm thick, the withdrawn ends of the cord form a lanyard. With intensive use, the cord will likely have to be washed frequently, moisture, dust and dirt will be absorbed into it with terrible force.
Outwardly, the arrow Strela really liked, which cannot be said about his scabbard, but more on that below. The thickness in the butt of 5.5 mm was especially impressive. I would also like to dwell on the fact that this knife has passed certification and is not a cold weapon in Ukraine.
products requires some effort, which gradually increases when the product is cut in half, which is understandable, the thickness is 5.5 mm. Although a knife of this class is quite excusable, to demand more from it would mean changing its very concept.
But at the same time, it would be nice if the manufacturer reduced the sharpening angle of the cutting edge of the main blade to at least 40 degrees so that the end user did not change it on his own. At the moment, it is about 45 degrees. In our opinion, this would increase the resilience of the Strela knife for products and soft materials without compromising its overall functionality..
Arrow knife test on cans, wood, fish and meat with bones.
Dry solid fish and meat with bones, the Arrow knife is best cut by cutting and punching, rather than sawing. In extreme cases, it is possible to cut the obstacle encountered, the powerful design of the knife allows this. No visible deformation of the cutting edge was observed..
It is possible to open canned goods, as well as zinc with cartridges, their tin is much thicker, it is possible with the main blade of a knife, but it will be more practical to use the already existing sharpened false blade to preserve the main one. It would probably be nice to increase the angle of sharpening of the false blade to 50-55 degrees. This, in our opinion, will contribute to its greater safety. At the moment, the angle of sharpening is 45-48 degrees.
The large thickness of the arrow Strela allows you to split dry firewood without much effort. In this case, you can not particularly worry with lateral loads on the blade. The knife calmly withstands it. Due to the good balancing and weight of the knife, it allows you to cut branches with a small thickness, up to 15 mm,.
Knife Throwing Arrow.
The form itself, and the name of the arrow Strela, suggests its use as a propellant. The throwing orientation of the knife is not in doubt. He enters the target quite confidently and deeply. But there are a number of negative points. Firstly, the lanyard formed from the ends of the braid cord, which is undoubtedly made for the convenience of non-throwing work, slows down (dangles in flight) the knife itself when throwing and contributes to its deflection down.
It is impossible to achieve acceptable and stable results. Secondly, with an unsuccessful throw, there is a very high probability of damage by the triangular top of the knife handle of the lanyard base coming out of the hole in the handle. In the photo in a red rectangle. As was confirmed by practical throwing, both cords were almost killed.
Based on the foregoing, you can voice the following requests and proposals to the manufacturer:
1. Remove the free ends of the winding cord that perform the functions of the lanyard in general, while adding two holes with a minimum of 5 mm in the design of the knife in the red rectangles shown in the photo so that the user can additionally fasten the lanyard himself.
2. Or leave the existing structure, but add an additional safety tube made of metal or plastic to the indicated area in the red rectangle in the photo. At the same time, the use of a knife as a throwing knife will be severely limited due to the above reasons.
General conclusions after testing the tourist knife Strela.
In general, I liked the arrow knife. He coped with all the work at a fairly high level. General wish, the durability of the black coating of the knife blade leaves much to be desired. So maybe it’s worth making it just anti-glare by sandblasting? So that it acquires just a gray color that does not glare in the sun. In the photo below, the knife coating after several hours of intensive work.
