The gas and gas equipment for tourist kitchens that have appeared on the market in recent decades have markedly replaced conventional gasoline stoves. This was facilitated primarily by the removal from production of gasoline primusov Bumblebee. Now they are made in Kazakhstan under the name Dastan. However, gas also had many shortcomings. The first and main is the high cost. In second place is the inability to replenish fuel reserves on the route and the ban on gas transportation in trains.

, Coleman, Covea, Markil and several others. Bright, but empty advertising, unfortunately, does not allow you to make an informed choice. Therefore, we try to rely on the experience of Moscow tourists, generalized D.A. Gubarev, consultant of the Turgalanterium store, with additions by the author.

First of all, tourists got acquainted with the Kempingaz company. It soon became clear that the plastic parts, especially the ring with a collet clamp for mounting the burner on the cylinder, melt when working under the heat shield, and the tightness of the connection to the cylinder is broken. Directly for sports trips, equipment of other companies is intended, which is distinguished by unification and interchangeability, as well as the absence of critical plastic parts. Among the many nickel-plated burners placed on store shelves, we distinguish three types.

– Small burners mounted on the cylinder.
– Large burners mounted on the cylinder.
– Remote burners with a large (wide) divider.

Small burners with a power of about 2.7 kW consume up to 100 g of gas per hour and, in the absence of wind or under a heat shield, can quickly boil water for 1-2 people. Large burners (with a wide baffle) with a power of 3–3.2 kW consume 140–150 g of gas per hour. Their efficiency is lower, but the flame, spreading over a large area, can boil a container with water by 5-8 liters, of course with a heat shield. Large burners mounted on the tank can be doubled, like conventional stoves. However, this design is unstable, and during overheating, the plastic ring, (gland) sealing control handle, can fail, there is nothing to replace it with. In addition, at a low temperature, it is not possible to heat the cylinder and control the remainder of the gas..

Remote burners lack these drawbacks. They have an obvious advantage. Gas is supplied through a tube passing through the flame of the burner, which increases efficiency. However, the area occupied by such burners is large. Do not put more than one under a round-bottom pan. But using remote burners, you can heat the cylinder. The gas expands as it flows, cools so that the bottom of the cylinders is often covered with hoarfrost. The pressure, and therefore the gas supply, decreases. At low air temperatures, the gas in the cylinder may turn into ice, and combustion will stop.

The freezing point of a gas depends on its composition. Pure butane can only be used in summer. At an air temperature below +10 degrees, the butane cylinder must be heated, and below +5 degrees it is very difficult to work with it. The situation is saved by the addition of low-boiling propane to the gas mixture. In some cylinders (MZK.), Its share reaches 35%. The company believes that such gas can be used in cold weather to minus 23 degrees. However, the calorific value of the mixture is lower, and the fuel consumption is correspondingly higher. A mixture of medium composition (ordinary gray Primus cylinders) operate at temperatures up to -10 degrees, and special ones up to -15.

In the cold season, conveniently approaching the bivouac place to warm the cylinders under clothes, and put them in a sleeping bag at night. Catalytic heating pads and gas heaters for cylinders and tents are available for cylinder heating. Craftsmen for the same purpose lengthen the connecting hose and place the cylinder on the lid of the pan. Domestic and Korean manufacturers fill the cylinders with ordinary household gas with a high content of harmful impurities, which explains their cheapness. Impurities of domestic gas quickly clog burners. The same thing happens with artisanal refueling of used cylinders and aerosol containers. In the latter case, ordinary water can also get into the cylinder – the result of a scam of sellers of domestic gas.

In addition to the burners, tourists have mastered gas lamps. They are good both as a light source and as a tent heater. Low gas consumption allows them to be used for afterburning used cylinders. However, no matter how good and convenient the gas is, in the cold season and in high-altitude hikes, liquid fuel remains unrivaled. Foreign gas burners are unlike the usual unit and consist of separate parts. Tank, pump, connecting pipe – the gas line and the burner are easily disconnected and can be transported separately. With this arrangement, overheating of the tank is not possible and, therefore, the safety valve is excluded.

Of all the known constructions, Primus burners are the least demanding on the quality of fuel. They do not contain plastic parts, unlike MSR products, where a pump is made of plastic. In Coleman burners, it is impossible to clean the gas pipe, and a new one is expensive. In addition to gasoline, Primus burners can use kerosene and other flammable liquids. Experience with heptane and hexane indicates that they are more economical and more convenient than gasoline. As for universal burners, it should be borne in mind that any system of the type two in one reduces the efficiency of both. Such burners have more fuel consumption, lower efficiency. As in the case of domestic stoves, cookware for imported burners should have a wide bottom and low walls. In tourist shops you can find special sets of cookware, from small, for 1-2 people, to group, with a volume of 5 liters or more. Special containers with a copper bottom are very economical. However, their cost is high. But autoclaves and pressure cookers are still made only by craftsmen. Here they are unrivaled, as they often use space technologies that are not available to foreign firms.
